Dear Members, A warm welcome back! I hope your summer holiday was a fun and relaxing one. This month marks the transition to the fall season. As a child, starting a new school year, watching the leaves change colors, and wondering at the sweaters that appeared miraculously in my closet I always thought of it as a time of fun and exciting change. In Singapore, although the leaves may not change colors and wardrobes remain the same, change is in the air, and there is a crisp, buzzy, fun energy around the Clubhouse that is a hallmark of the season. Contributing to the fun has been the opening of the Lobby area and The Club’s all-day dining outlet, Tradewinds. These spaces have proven to be hugely popular with Members. The long-awaited return of mouth-watering local dishes and western favorites have been very positively received. The Wings, Chicken Rice, Laksa, Superfood Chopped Salad, Murgh Tandoori Tikka. How to choose?! Wait times for a table at Tradewinds have been a bit longer than anticipated due to the popularity of the outlet, but the Food and Beverage team is working on ways to shorten the stand-by time and make the wait more enjoyable. Other spaces will also be opening very soon. The team is putting the finishing touches on the Concierge Desk and new Membership Office on Level One, and they are looking forward to being able to assist Members at their new location. The Gym is also coming along nicely with handover having occurred at the end of August. It will still take some time for rectification works to be completed and the team to prepare the space for opening. I know you will be excited to use the larger cardio studio and special equipment The Club has installed in the group fitness studio to support fun new classes such as aerial yoga. The Gourmet Pantry is also nearing completion and will open along a similar timeline to that of the Gym. It is sure to quickly become your favorite go-to stop for carefully curated wines, gourmet cheese, and other delicacies. Redevelopment has been a long journey, but as the Clubhouse gets closer to completion, I hope you are enjoying the new outlets. Not just the journey, but the day to day operations of The Club as well would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of The Club’s wonderful staff. As Members, we are truly fortunate to have such an FROM THE PRESIDENT

exceptional team of staff members at The Club. This past July, The Club celebrated its employees at the annual staff event with a Black and Gold themed dinner and dance. During the evening, 48 staff members were presented with a token of appreciation for their long years of service at The Club. Their years of service ranged from five to a whopping 45 years. Special awards were also presented to outstanding staff who have performed exceptionally well this past year. With such a solid team it is always a challenging decision to choose the staff members that will receive these awards, and to be selected is a very high honor indeed. Please take a minute to congratulate this year’s recipients of The Club’s extraordinary service awards, Rose (Concierge), Julie (Thinkspace), Nerang (Engineering), Kumar (Grillhouse) and Adam (Grillhouse), the next time you see them at The Club. Members’ appreciation for the outstanding service provided by The Club’s staff led to the creation of the EAGLE Fund. The EAGLE Fund is a Member-initiative that was approved by the Membership at the Annual General Meeting in November 2015. Short for Emergency Access Grant for Club Employees, the EAGLE Fund provides staff who are faced with an extraordinary need the opportunity to obtain additional funds during emergencies (e.g., financial aid for natural disasters, fire, serious/sudden illness, etc.). The EAGLE Fund Tennis Tournament will take place on September 6 & 7, followed by the EAGLE swim-a-thon on September 8. Please join us, and cheer on Devin, Randy, Greg, Michell, and Abdul with his team of lifeguards as they complete 71 laps in the pool! All proceeds from the events will go to the EAGLE Fund. Interested Members can donate to the swim-a-thon by scanning the QR code below, or by picking up hard copy donation forms at the Concierge. This generosity of spirit, culture of positivity, and appreciation have always been part of what makes The Club a home away from home for me. These principles are the true foundation of our community. They are what guide us through each year and all the changes along the way. This fall, as we celebrate the Club’s 71 st birthday, I look forward to watching our community carry this culture and history with us, and watching it grow, as we transition into our new spaces at The Club.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Dear Members,

The past 3 years have seen The Club make a drastic transformation. We have new facilities, new outlets and even a new logo. As we welcome a brand new Clubhouse, it’s high time our Club magazine goes through a much needed revamp as well. Starting from November, our magazine will switch to a seasonal format instead of a bi-monthly one, to better align with the American school terms. We will have a winter issue (Nov/Dec/Jan), a spring issue (Feb/March/April), a summer issue (May/June/July), and a fall issue (Aug/ Sept/Oct). This reduce in frequency of Club magazines doesn’t mean we are reducing our communication with Members – stay in touch and get the latest updates via our Facebook, Instagram, regular dedicated e-newsletters, website, LCD screens and posters around The Club. Turn to page 12 for more information. With the launch of 8 outlets featuring completely new concepts in the past few years, we understand that policies at different outlets can get confusing. Management would like to take this opportunity to remind Members that policies are implemented to keep everyone safe, and to ensure our Club fosters a sense of warmth and community among both Members and staff. For more information on policies pertaining to Membership cards, Guests, parking, smoking and more, please flip to page 3. The last lap is always the hardest – we seek your patience as we work on getting the Gym and The Gourmet Pantry ready for your enjoyment.

The dog days of summer are finally behind us as we enter the last half of the year. The next couple of months will be extremely busy, as we celebrate our 71st birthday, followed by Thanksgiving and Christmas. Pencil in our birthday celebration on September 14 with a Happy Days party reminiscent of the 50s. Unlike recent birthday bashes, this year’s party will take place in the evening from 7:00 p.m. all the way to 1:00 am. Come by for a swinging good time complete with free flow beer, bar bites, live bands, dancing and more. Get your tickets from Concierge now and celebrate this milestone with us. Christmas in September ensures those who are spending the festivities back in the States can also join in the fun and experience an American Club Christmas. Drop by the Lobby on the weekend of September 28 and 29 and sample complimentary offerings from our Festive Takeaway menu. Tuck into comforting favorites such as our succulent Fire Roasted tom Turkey, delicious Bone-In Gammon Ham and comforting Apple Cinnamon Pie, or try our new creations – Australian Boneless Leg of Lamb, Mini Corn Muffins and Noel Log Cake. While tasting learn about all of The Club’s offerings over the festive season, from designing and printing your Christmas cards to Winter Camp. Due to redevelopment it was impossible for us to provide festive catering last year. Now our festive catering is back with a bang. Bylaws With many outlets newly opened in the past couple of years, we understand that our bylaws can get confusing. Here’s a short recap of some important bylaws that impact your daily life at The Club. MEMBERSHIP CARDS Members are required to produce their membership cards voluntarily upon entering The Club, and when requested by staff when making transactions. Do note that Membership Cards are non- transferable. Bylaw 1.2 GUESTS Members are required to register their Guests via our self check-in kiosks or by informing the Concierge, and Guests should remain in the company of the sponsoring Member while on Club premises at all times. The General Manager has the authority to limit non-Member access or specify non-member times for events, outlets, and general areas. Members and parents of youths who sign in Guests to The Club are liable for all debts and actions of the Guests at The Club. Bylaw 1.3 PHOTOGRAPH, RECORDING AND MUSIC No musical instrument, radio, audio player or similar devices may be played on The Club premises without the permission of the General Manager or Duty Manager unless with headphones and in a manner that is not disruptive to other Members. Members should not take photographs or record videos / audio notes on Club premises without the advanced approval of the General Manager unless such photographs or recordings are for the private use of Club Members only. The Club is protected by closed circuit cameras and all images are recorded for the purpose of providing a safe Clubhouse for Members, Guests and staff. The Club may use utilize footage as it deems fit to the extent permitted by Singapore law. Bylaw 2.16 SMOKING The National Environment Agency of Singapore has designated public areas within the Orchard Road precinct as No Smoking Zones. Please note that smoking will only be allowed at Designated Smoking Areas (DSA), and The Club does not have DSA within its premises. DSA nearest to The Club are DFS Galleria, Far East Plaza, Goodwood Park Hotel and Shaw House. Bylaw 2.8 PARKING Parking facilities at The Club are reserved for vehicles owned or leased by Members and are required to be registered for these parking privileges. Each Member may register up to three cars provided that no Member registers a car for parking privileges on behalf of another Member or a non-Member. Members may park registered cars in The Club's parking area only while the Member remains on Club premises or as determined by the General Manager. Members with three registered cars are only permitted to have two cars in the Club at any one time. Bylaw 3.1 ELECTRONIC DEVICES For the comfort and enjoyment of other Members, usage of cell phones and other electronic communications devices is restricted to certain common areas of The Club. In areas of The Club where usage of electronic devices is permitted, Members are encouraged to undertake their usage in a respectful manner and to put their devices on silent mode when in The Club. Bylaw 15.5.1

Stars n’ Stripes Summer Camp June 10 – August 9

Keep your eyes peeled for Stars n’ Stripes Fall Camp happening from October 14 - 25!

It wouldn’t be summer without daily jaunts to attractions all over Singapore! Our lucky campers had a ball of a time at Coney Island, became young zoologists at the Singapore Zoo and even went on a treasure hunt at Pulau Ubin. Our revamped camp program features community work, and Campers were taught empathy and how to care for the environment through activities such as cleaning up the beautiful beaches and distributing rations to the less fortunate.

Colonial Cup A big congratulations to our TAC golf team, who won the Championship this year with 12 of the 18 possible points on July 7 at Warren Golf & Country Club! The Colonial Cup is an annual golf competition between The American Club, The British Club, and The Tanglin Club and we’ll have the honor of hosting the tournament in 2020. Thank you to everyone who took part in the competition.

STAFF NIGHT 2019 It was truly an affair to remember for 300 of our employees, who enjoyed an appreciation night at Grand Hyatt Singapore on July 29. In a welcome twist to The Club’s annual Staff Dinner & Dance, team members were treated to an amazing levitating man attraction, an impressive all-female team LED water drums performance and a tantalizing dinner buffet. 48 staff were also acknowledged for achievingmilestone years of employment at The Club, with HoWah Jin (Housekeeping) given a special accolade for hitting his 45th year. Five outstanding individuals were then presented with recognition awards for their exceptional service this year. Read more about our awardees on the next page. Our magazine is a staple in our Club life, as Members expect to receive this important vehicle of information every other month in their mailboxes. CHANGE IN CLUB MAGAZINE SCHEDULE Starting from November, our magazines will be published four times a year (down from 6 times a year every other month) – Winter Issue (Nov/Dec/Jan), Spring Issue (Feb/March/April), Summer Issue (May/June/July), and Fall Issue (Aug/Sept/Oct). Cutting down on the frequency of magazines allows us to go electronic and save trees, which is in line with the green initiatives we have adopted over the past year. Members can expect more editorial features on both Members and staff, trivia, recipes and handy guides for an enriching Club life. Additionally, over the past 2 years, The Club has gradually introduced additional monthly e-news blasts for dedicated interest groups. This includes Junior What’s On: Youth & Kids, The Reader (library), Spa, Fitness & Leisure, on top of What’s On and Wine & Dine, which are sent to Members fortnightly. We’re also active on social media. Our Facebook page contains timely post event coverage and redevelopment videos are uploaded on Youtube regularly. Over the past few months, we have also launched new channels of communication; Instagram was launched in April, and our TAC Buy & Sell Facebook group was launched in May. Several more interest Facebook groups will be launched in the coming months. This change enables us to get information to Members in a more timely manner, in smaller but more frequent batches, for easier reading. We look forward to unveiling our new, revamped magazine in November and hope that you will enjoy the fresh new look!

NICHE GROUP PROGRAMS The Club has several niche group programs that recognize Members either for membership tenure or spending loyalty. Members of the VIP, Elite, 10K and 15K niche groups represent some of the most longstanding and active users, and make up about 45% of the membership accounts. In addition to enjoying discounts all year round at almost all our outlets, one of the most prized benefits as a niche group Member is getting to attend our exclusive themed parties. Here’s a peek at what went down at our most recent Niche Group Parties! VIP Gold: Mamma Mia Party (July 15, 2019) Our Members came to dance and jive and have the time of their lives! The Mamma Mia party saw a reawakening of dancing queens (and kings) as Members took to the dance floor to the catchy tunes of ABBA. The photo wall that was reminiscent of the famous arched doorways in Santorini was a hit, and Members received photo print-outs of this fun evening, looking like they were whisked off to sun kissed Greece. The VIP Members that came, gamely dressed to the theme in killer bell bottoms and colorful print, added to the wonderful atmosphere that evening.

Elite: Art Jam Party (March 10, 2019) Our first ever family-inclusive Elite Party was a fun bonding afternoon for our Elite Members and their families. Everyone donned their aprons, picked up a paintbrush and got creative at our Art Jam party! The ballroom was an explosion of colors – kids got their hands dirty by painting on our huge wall mural, while teens and adults busied themselves with painting terra cotta pots, silkscreen printing and paper making. Dainty cakes, pastries and snacks in a kaleidoscope of colors filled the tables while Members also turned up in colorful outfits!

10K/15K: Christmas Party (December 20, 2018) We went back in time with a festive Colors of the 90s Christmas Party to celebrate the season of giving. Cocktail tables with soft neon lights adorned our newly opened Ballroom, and Members picked up glow stick accessories at the door to match the theme. Members tucked into our delicious Club-made signature turkey and sweet treats baked fresh by our team of pastry chefs as they mixed and mingled. The live band provided good music to amp up the infectious festive cheer – what a fun twist to our usual festive parties!

From dedicated monthly lucky draws to special discounts at outlets, join our Junior Membership program to connect with fellow young adults and teens! DID YOU KNOW? • Our Junior Membership program caters to those below 25 years of age, enabling older children to stay connected to the Club community under the umbrella of the family membership. • JMs (12 to 21 years) enjoy the ability to sign in 2 Guests at any time and utilize The Club independently without parental supervision. Kids under 12 years must be accompanied by a parent at all times within The Club. • Extended JMs (21 to 25 years of age) enjoy the same access and privileges as their parents and are not restricted to 2 Guests per visit – e.g. if parents are Elite Member, their child under the extended JM program enjoy the same Elite privileges. Members have the flexibility to apply for an Extended Junior Membership only for the months that the JM will be using The Club, and the membership can be put on hold for the months that the JM will not be using The Club. This is ideal for JMs who may be in college overseas and return to Singapore for summer break. • Parents may purchase a Legacy Membership for JMs who are turning 26 and above, and who have been JMs for at least three years (does not have to be consecutive) at a special rate and enjoy F&B vouchers under our WIN/WIN+ bonus referral program.

SUSTAINABILITY

Over the past two years, callouts were received fromMembers to switch to more sustainable practices. The Club’s Strategic Planning Committee realized in early last year that The Club did not have a clear focus or plan around sustainability, even though ‘green’ practices have gained importance both at home and globally. The Sustainability Working Group (SWG) was thus established in 2018 to outline a strategy for enhancing The Club’s sustainability and reducing its ecological footprint. Initial work was done last year on creating an assessment of sustainability and environmental practices and processes at The Club, and under SWG’s leadership, a sustainability assessment of The Club was undertaken by a consultant over a two-week period in April. The assessment resulted in the formulation of 68 recommendations covering a broad range of issues including water and energy conservation, waste minimization, and the efficient use of materials and chemicals at The Club. With this in mind, a Green Team comprising TAC staff from key departments was formed over the summer, and kicked off with an inaugural meeting in late June. Over the past three months, the Green Team looked into the feasibility of implementing recommendations from the sustainability report. Some initiatives have already been implemented, while the majority of the recommendations are currently in progress. In the coming months, expect to see more of the following initiatives: • ‘Go Green’ posters and digital ads communicating green initiatives The Club has implemented (based on the sustainability recommendations report), or tips on sustainable living beyond Club life • Dedicated ‘Go Green’ e-newsletter • Features in The Club magazines • Green discussions on Facebook • Giveaways on Instagram that encourage Members to adopt sustainable lifestyles

Last year we celebrated our platinum jubilee with a host of events and surprises throughout the year. This year, the festivities continue with our 71st birthday celebration. As we look back on how things have changed in seven decades, take a virtual walk down memory lane with snippets from some of our most ardent supporters.

“I first joined as a Junior Member. My father gifted me my Club member- ship as my 21st birthday present. I had my 21st birthday party here, in the Manhattan room. Years later, my son held his 21st at The 2 nd Floor. Three generations of us grew up here.”

“What attracted me to The American Club was that it was the first Club, the first place in Singapore, to have nine or ten pin bowling. Nowhere else in Singapore had any bowling alley. There were about four lanes and it was totally manual.”

“First and foremost, The American Club is a family club. We like that you can make use of a lot of amenities here, and you never need to rush yourself, you have plenty of time here because The Club is open for long hours. We loved the old Manhattan Room and Eagle’s Nest.”

“One of my favorite memories is from when I was maybe 5 or 6 years old. That was around 1959, or 1960. The Club would show family movies on a screen on Sunday nights. I remember watching Western movies, you know, like John Wayne, with a glass of Coca- Cola and popcorn.”

“My favorite memory was when I invited my wife to The Club in 1963. I wanted to impress her. I had a sports car, an NGA, one of those very old sports car. We had drinks at the entrance. The entrance was very striking then – very open, very wide. She was duly impressed.”

“In the beginning it was almost like a second home to me. We were here almost every other day, bowling or playing tennis. It's a good place to come to. I should say it's one of the nicest Clubs I’ve been to.”

Congrats on turning 71 in September together with us! Why did you choose to join The American Club? My wife Patricia and I joined The Club in May 1991. I was actually deciding between The American Club and another social club. After I checked out both clubs, we concluded that The American Club was more family oriented and family friendly. This was extremely important to us at that point, as my children were much younger and we wanted a space where both the adults and children can enjoy and utilize at the same time. Additionally, we had friends who were Members and brought us to The Club. The facilities here were definitely more conducive for young families compared to other clubs at that time. After my youngest son was born in 1992, we started spending a lot more time at The Club together as a family. My kids loved this place when they were young for all the kids’ facilities. Now, we primarily meet here to have family meals together. Patricia loves the salads and yogurt at Central – she says it’s the best! We love Tradewinds as it’s really cozy and we have tried both the buffet and a la carte menu. Sunday brunches at The 2 nd Floor is also a great place for family gatherings. My grandson comes to The Club now and loves the pizza at Grillhouse – he even gives me special orders to please remember to buy CELEBRATION It’s twice the fun this September – we’re throwing a big bash to celebrate our 71st birthday, and VIP Member Lim Kok Khuang turns 71 too! With our birthdays just a week apart, hear from this long-time Member on his journey at our home away from home. You’ve been a Member for 28 years – what are some of your fondest memories at The Club?

What does The American Club mean to you? The Club is a place that we can call home. We are Singaporeans and not expatriates, but whenever we go out of town, it’s a nice feeling to be welcomed back to The Club. We have lots of friends here and we all love The Club. The staff also contributes to the homey atmosphere at The Club, it’s not just the family-friendly facilities at The Club. The staff are so welcoming and are like family to us. We also love celebrating the festive season at The Club – we are looking forward to the Festive Guide and spending Christmas here! We really miss the festive catering especially since it wasn’t available last year. We will always order our Festive Takeaways from The Club. What do you love most about The Club? We are Members of other social clubs in Singapore but frequent The American Club the most. I love that as a Member of TAC, I get to enjoy reciprocal clubs in other countries – we love Tokyo American Club and Pacific City Club in Bangkok! At the same time, we are looking forward to the end of redevelopment so we can enjoy the new Clubhouse and have a nice environment to drop in and relax.
