FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Members,
The Club’s Annual General Meeting will be taking place on November 14, and I encourage all eligible Members to vote. Your vote counts and matters to the future of The Club. We have several Member proposed resolutions that have been tabled, as well as six seats on the General Committee up for election. The Club will post AGM and balloting information by October 30, so please be on the lookout for those. I’d like to say it has been a true pleasure serving as Club President over the past year and a half, and I hope to be re-elected to provide continuity at this vital time in The Club’s history. I have met many of you in the hallways, at events and in the new spaces, and I feel very proud to be part of this community and what we’re building for the future. From my family to yours, I wish you a wonderful festive season filled with love, laughter and blessings. May your 2019 shine bright!
Season’s greetings! It’s hard to believe the end of the year is nearly here, school vacations are almost upon us, and we’re preparing to welcome 2019. The past year has been a whirlwind of activity at The Club; a year certainly not without its challenges but one I believe we should be proud of given what we’ve achieved together. Our year began as we welcomed our new General Manager, Devin Kimble, to the team. Devin was selected by a Member-led search committee that narrowed hundreds of applicants down to the three most suitable candidates. In my role as Club President, I was happy to sit on this committee as a non-voting observer to see Members and staff come to a consensus and recommend the best candidate to the General Committee. We recently celebrated Devin’s six-month anniversary at The Club, and with 20+ years of food and beverage experience in Asia, we are fortunate to have him during this time. As 2018 progressed, newly constructed outlets began opening – first Central and sên Spa, followed by the pool and finally, Grillhouse. Although we are still working on the pool area, Member usage across these outlets has been strong. Our fantastic Aquatics team has a record number of swimming lesson participants. The staff continue to work on finessing the new areas, and we are truly fortunate to have such a dedicated team at The Club. Over the summer, we began working on our top ten list of pool area improvements as identified by Members. These improvements are a combined effort of volunteer Members, management, and the redevelopment consultants. As of this writing, we are focusing on solutions for rain coverage and pool deck drainage. Both of these issues should be completed within the next month. By the time this letter is published, construction on the Union Bar, The Galbraith Ballroom, Bowling Alley and B1 bathrooms will be finished. The spaces look fantastic, and I can’t wait for Members to experience them! These spaces will relieve pass-through traffic on the pool deck, as we’ll have a new set of elevators and alternate routes to reach the Scotts Road building. Opening dates will be announced soon.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members,
Happy Holidays! I hope you and your family are enjoying the run-up to the festive season and will have the opportunity to spend some well-deserved time together. We have a full calendar of festive events lined up so you can celebrate the year end stress-free, keep the little ones busy, and relish every moment of the season. As I write this, we are nearing completion of our TOP 2A spaces: the Union Bar, The Galbraith Ballroom, Bowling Alley, and B2 bathrooms. We are looking forward to opening these outlets in the coming days and I hope you’ll take the chance to come see and test them out. We were conscious of not taking over these spaces from the contractor until they were “operationally fit for use”. This was a learning for our team after the pool opening, when we took handover upon “practical completion.” Although these are industry terms, the bottom line is that we did not take over the TOP 2A spaces until most of the defects were fixed; consultants, Member volunteers, and senior management went through the areas to check for potential problems and ensure these spaces can be launched without need for closure to troubleshoot operational issues. This process allows us to unveil all three outlets with significantly fewer defects compared to the pools, spa, and temporary gym. As with any project of this size, opening spaces is a process that takes time. We know there will be changes that need to be made once we get Members into the outlets and see the reality of operations and usage patterns. We ask you to respectfully submit your feedback about potential areas of improvement via redevelopment@amclub.org.sg for consolidation and consideration. Each piece of feedback is read and circulated among our redevelopment team. Issues identified as defects are added to a list for action by the consultant team.
Please know that your feedback is important to us and it is captured; however, fixing defects is a process that happens over several months. That means that seemingly small fixes can take weeks to repair. We know that at times this can cause frustration within our community, but it is the reality of a project of this size and scope. Contractually, our construction team has one year after the full completion of the project to fix all defects, and fixing issues on our own or via a third party can negatively impact our warranties and service agreements. We appreciate your patience with this. After the completion and opening of the TOP 2A outlets, we will be focusing our efforts on The Quad, our new youth space. We do not have an opening date at this point, but as soon as we have something definitive, we will share it with membership. Our youngest Members will be able to enjoy a two-story play space with all types of activities – a tree house, Lego wall, two-level Wallhola climbing structure, magnetic wall machine, screening room, arcade games and so much more. We are excited to get you into the new space! The opening of all these outlets will greatly expand our usable space again; something we are all grateful for. I speak for our entire team when I say thank you for your patience and understanding during this transition; it means a lot to us. Our Annual General Meeting is just around the corner on November 14 – I encourage you to attend and vote in this election.
Season’s greetings from all of us at The Club, and wishing you and your family a joyous holiday season!
Devin

New Logo Launch Thank you to all who joined in our new logo launch activities over the weekend of September 28-30!
NEWS
We have updated our logo to reflect The Club's renewal and transformation as it undergoes redevelopment. The refreshed logo retains attributes from our previous logos. • The eagle remains a focal point to stay true to our core American identity • Its left-turned head and downward-curving wings denote goodwill and harmony • Its stylized motif embodies strength, confidence and dignity • The shield on the eagle’s chest bears the TAC monogram – a reference used by our Members and staff to represent The Club externally – making it an ownable mark that is unique to our club • The logo’s design embodies the 4 attributes of our brand persona, which were identified by our Branding Committee as: Bold, Inclusive, Vibrant and Positive • Our brand mark is now simplified so that it can be reproduced more easily and consistently on Club collateral and merchandise – a key way in which we spread brand awareness

TAC70 CRAFT BEER Turning 70 is a milestone, and we are celebrating our birthday all year long with special treats, promotions, events, and…our very own American Club craft beer! After months of research and hard work – tasting mug after mug of delicious beer is very hard work – our 70 th birthday craft beer is finally ready. Devin, our General Manager, wanted to create a special American Beer to celebrate The Club’s 70 th birthday and suggested a “Steam Beer”, originating in the West Coast of America. “Steam” was a nickname for beer brewed under primitive conditions and without modern refrigeration. While the origin of the name remains shrouded in mystery, it is likely related to the original practice of fermenting beer on San Francisco’s rooftops in a cool climate. The foggy night air naturally cooled the fermenting beer, creating steam off the warm open pans. In keeping with this can-do and innovative spirit of early Americans, lager yeast, which in Europe would have fermented in colder ambient temperature, is fermented at warmer San Francisco’s ale yeast temperature. This explains the interesting flavor profile of our beer and the malty and hoppy characteristics. On top of these distinct flavors, Members also may be able to pick out the estery fruity flavors that come from the fermentation process.
NEWS
This is our gift to all beer lovers – born in USA and proudly made in Singapore by The American Club.
About TAC70 Craft Beer A blend of pale and caramel malts is used in making the wort. The hops used are Pacific Jade, Cascade, Chinook, Centennial and Amarillo. The yeast is special, California Common yeast, derived from the world famous Anchor Steam beer of San Francisco.
This exclusive craft beer will be available for a limited time only at selected dining outlets. Stay tuned for more information and have a beery good time!

SUSTAINABILITY AT THE CLUB
We all play a vital part in driving sustainability for the environment, and The Club is committed to reducing its carbon footprint. We’ve received numerous callouts from Members to switch to more sustainable practices, and a plan was quickly put in place by the Sustainability Working Group. We have been rolling out several initiatives gradually since October. Eco-Digester The culinary and housekeeping teams have introduced an eco-waste management system to reduce the total tonnage of waste produced by The Club. Previously, food waste and general waste were not separated and disposed of together. The storage of waste not only attracts vermin, but utilizes large plastic trash bags on a regular basis. With the Eco-Digester, food waste is segregated from general waste, and the former is then recycled. The Eco-Digester uses a combination of bacteria to decompose food waste. After two weeks, the end product of the decomposition process is grey water that will undergo further treatment, and eventually be safely discharged into the site grease trap piping. Sustainable Barramundi The Club has specially sourced locally grown, sea-farmed barramundi from Kühlbarra, Singapore's sole sustainable barramundi farmers. These non-GMO fish are reared in large, open sea-cages and transported directly from the farm to The Club. Sustainable fishing not only produces healthy fish stocks but also betters the coastal environment. Look out for delicious creations by our chefs!
Did you know? Central and Grillhouse have switched to paper straws!
The Club will be rolling out more sustainability initiatives as new outlets come online…keep your eyes peeled!

A REAL PAIGE TURNER
NEWS
Our Tuesday night was made extra special as Club Member and newly-minted author Paige Parker launched her book to Members on October 23. From being held at gunpoint in Angola to teaching a spontaneous aerobics class to a group of women in Saudi Arabia, Paige delighted the crowd with anecdotes and video footages from her epic Guinness World Record trip with then-fiancé Jim Rogers. Jim’s account of the trip, Adventure Capitalist , was written almost immediately after the trip, but why was Paige’s side of the story only published 10 years after? With two daughters, a move across the Pacific to our sunny shores and a host of philanthropic work under her belt, it’s a wonder Paige gets anything else done. But the multi-hyphenated woman wanted to show daughter Happy her side of the story – her relationship with her family, her growth from a Southern American belle to a woman of the world, and how the 3-year round-the-world trip changed her irrevocably. Thankfully, writing was the only constant when Paige was on the road, and the sharpness of those memories helped to keep the trip fresh in her mind even a decade later. Paige’s tale of self-discovery is humorous, uplifting, and serves to inspire everyone to step out of their comfort zones. While investment mogul and husband Jim Rogers has made a name for himself around the world, it is Paige – board member of UN Women, gemologist, loyal supporter of the local arts and now a published author – we have our eye on. Don’t Call Me Mrs Rogers: Love, Loathing and Our Epic Drive Around the World by Paige Parker “Paige’s unparalleled confidence, forthrightness and generosity reach right into the hearts of all who know her. Wisdom so insightful, prose so simply beautiful, her memoir will leave every reader with indelible memories.” – Lynn Yeow-de Vito, co-founder of Loop PR and Sassy Mama Singapore “Paige did what all of us secretly want to do: go on an amazing adventure of self-discovery…yet we should all be so brave, to reach outside our comfort zones, to experience, to dream, to be curious and most importantly, to be open to people and situations.” – Georgette Tan, president of the Singapore Committee for UN Women BEST SELLER Non-Fiction Top 10 at Kinokuniya
Don’t Call Me Mrs Rogers: Love, Loathing & Our Epic Drive Around the World is available at all major bookstores.

STAFF FEATURE
MEET OUR TENNIS DIRECTOR Our Tennis community is an active and tight-knit bunch and Tennis Director Tomas Biernacki has been helming this sporting group of players since he joined The Club in 2016. Under his leadership, the tennis program was revamped to focus on more high intensity group clinics, tennis socials and events. Members rave about Tomas on a regular basis, and participation for tennis events and classes soared in recent years. His dedication and hard work was not in vain, as he was recently awarded Peter Burwash International (PBI)’s “Professional of the Year” award – do congratulate Tomas on his well- deserved win when you see him around The Club!
What is PBI’s “Professional of the Year” award? PBI is an international association recognized for its world-class tennis teaching program. Held in June at the scenic Bio Hotel Stanglwirt Resort & Spa in Austria, PBI’s annual meeting saw tennis leaders all over the world congregate for an educational week to network, catch up with news in the industry, attend seminars and collaborate with each other on a gamut of coaching topics and skills. The “Professional of the Year” award recognizes individuals who have effected real change, initiated new programs and ideas and contributed to the growth and excellent reputation of PBI. The winner is personally selected by Peter Burwash (Founder) and René Zondag (CEO). What are some of the obstacles you had to overcome to achieve this award? The award is usually given to professionals that have been with PBI for a minimum of 3 years. In PBI's 43 years of history, only 4 professionals attained this award twice. I am the first professional in PBI’s history to receive this award with only less than 2 years with the organization. I had big shoes to fill when previous Tennis Director Manuel Miletic left The Club, but the new initiatives and programs proved to be a hit with Members. Since my arrival in Singapore, I have established a solid network with the local tennis community, and this has resulted in several new opportunities for PBI. What are some of the tennis offerings Members can look forward to next year? I will continue to improve tennis operations and services to Members – we recently started taking bookings via the JOGA app, which really streamlined the whole booking process. Members can easily check their class schedules, and updates are posted immediately if socials or events are cancelled due to inclement weather. Stay tuned for more information!

Claymore Entrance Updates
The Claymore Entrance design was created together with the input of the Design Review Committee (now Project Stakeholder Group), staff, management, Member volunteers, the architects, and the interior design team. Key Design Priorities These were the identified key priorities when designing the Claymore entrance.
Large enough canopy to keep people dry in most conditions
Ramp wide enough for strollers or wheelchairs
REDEVELOPMENT UPDATES
The new Claymore Entrance incorporates several design features: Seating under the awning for those waiting for taxis or pick ups Blend in with the look and feel of the Club exterior The five trees outside on Claymore Road will remain as per a directive from the National Parks Board. For that reason, one of the trees will grow through a space cut out of the canopy. The canopy is a permanent feature made out of steel and heat strengthened, tempered glass. The canopy extends out until the end of the planter boxes. It is not able to extend over the sidewalk per government mandate, as that is public land and would limit the turning radius of large vehicles. Bench seating has been incorporated into the planter boxes, as many people previously used these for seating. There is a gradual ramp on the right side of the staircase. The ramp is wide enough to accommodate a stroller or wheelchair. It is lined by two railings for those who need support while walking. The entrance to the ramp faces the guardhouse area, so that it provides easy access from the carpark. There is also a ramp entrance from the taxi area, so you can enter directly from Claymore Hill. The taxi stand will remain in its old location when the Claymore Entrance opens. The entrance and exit to the carpark will also remain the same. There will be a fire engine hardstanding to the left of the canopy when you're facing the Club. The hardstanding is a government requirement and will be incorporated into the landscape.
Final Claymore Entrance Design The above is the Claymore Entrance design that was reviewed by the Project Stakeholder Committee and was approved by the Project Control Group and the General Committee. This is the design that is being built.

THE QUAD
Y O U T H S U R V E Y R E S U L T S
Thank you to the 174 families who submitted 228 survey forms as part of our Youth Survey over the summer. After consolidating all the feedback, we passed it on to our Youth and Family Committee (Y&F Committee) for the their consideration and action. Keep reading to find how we’ll be implementing your feedback into level B1 (for ages 6 & above) of The Quad.
EDUCATIONAL PLAY
This area will include the Lego wall and a Lego table as well as the imagination playground (building blocks) and the magnetic wall machine. We had several Members write in comments regarding the safety of the marble machine, so the Y&F Committee has decided to source a new type of machine that will use a magnetic wall and possibly ping pong balls with similar capabilities. The Committee has added an additional Magnetic chalk wall for kids to doodle.
GAMING Gaming was the area where Membership was most divided on the outcome. We had many write-in comments both for and against gaming. The majority of the comments broke down over age, with those who have younger children (5 and under and 6-8 years old) voting against screen time / gaming and those who were older (9 years or older) or who had older siblings voting in favor of screens / gaming. The Y&F Committee is conscious of offering balance to the entire Membership. The gaming area is in the older children’s space on Level B1 and is not accessible for children under 6 without parental supervision. This area will contain 4 PC gaming units, 2 Nintendo Switch units, 2 PS4 units, and 5 arcade machines—Basketball, Mario Kart, and 4-player Pac Man. One additional arcade machine is being sourced by the Committee, as the Transformers game that was originally proposed in the survey received significantly less votes than the others. Children will be able to play games based on the game’s age recommendation. As in our existing youth space, all of our existing games, as well as the new arcade games, will be chargeable. EVERGREEN GAMES Our evergreen games received the highest number of votes out of all our offerings. We’ll be including foosball, air hockey, ping pong, and a selection of board games here. The major area of Member feedback for this space was to ensure that the equipment the Club purchased was of good quality. Our Y&F Committee went to test out equipment personally to ensure our standards are met. Members also wrote in a number of suggestions for board games. The Committee is consolidating this information and will purchase the top ten most requested games for the space.
