LESSONS FOR LIFE

academics as well as in developing new relationships. We give tremendous credit to Master Patrick.

It’s almost a rite of passage for our youngest Members to enroll in Master Patrick’s Taekwondo classes, but what do our jeja take away from his lessons beyond the classroom? We sat down with the Viveritos, whose son Anthony practiced Taekwondo under Master Patrick’s tutelage. Why should Members enroll their kids in Taekwondo? Master Patrick has taught at The American Club for more than thirty years and has positively influenced so many lives. Our son Anthony studied with Master Patrick for nearly eight years and this contributed tremendously to his development, which he will benefit from throughout his life. Master Patrick not only teaches the physical aspects, but also the philosophical aspects of the sport – I believe this enhances children's confidence and discipline. His students are also less likely to be bullied, as they learn various ways to deal with such issues in a positive way. I truly think that any child, boy or girl, would benefit from his program. How has Anthony benefited from his Taekwondo training? The consistent training has made Anthony both physically and mentally strong. Master Patrick's teachings encompass some military aspects of discipline and focus. These characteristics are constantly reinforced and have had a positive impact on Anthony’s academics and attitude. Master Patrick also inculcates respect for self, for parents and for everyone we cross paths with. He works hard to bring out the best in his students. What is one key characteristic that Taekwondo has instilled in Anthony? One takeaway that stood out was resilience – Anthony learned that through hard work and persistence, one can realize his or her goals, no matter how unachievable it may seem. Anthony’s resilience helped him achieve his third Dan in Taekwondo, a feat that we’re all incredibly proud of him for. How do you think the lessons from Taekwondo have helped Anthony in life? Master Patrick has imparted in his students the most important character traits of honesty, respect, hard work, kindness, humility, and indomitable spirit. We have just moved back to the US, and it is fascinating to watch how Anthony has easily adjusted to the transition, both in

YOUTH

What sets Taekwondo apart from other martial arts? Martial arts are amazing channels for physical and mental exploration. I have studied various martial art forms and always knew that when I had children, I would start them in Taekwondo as I feel it provides the best foundation for young kids. Students have to perfect forms in each belt before they can graduate to new levels, ensuring that they do not take shortcuts. The positive philosophy is important as well. It should be noted that the most important aspect of learning is one's teacher. Master Patrick sits at the top of great teachers that I have had the opportunity to witness. We will always be thankful to him for what he has done for Anthony and our family. The American Club and its Members are extremely fortunate to have such a wonderful teacher.
