FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Members, Happy New Year and Gong Xi Fai Cai! As we usher in the Year of the Ox with cautious optimism, none of us will soon forget the turbulence and uncer tainty of 2020. There is much to look forward to in the upcoming year. This is my first letter as President to ever yone in the extended American Club Community. I am truly grateful for the trust that you have placed in your General Committee. As President, an impor tant par t of my role is to keep the community informed about the direction that The Club is heading. I will do my best to communicate with you as we navigate through 2021. As you may be aware, the Club star ted this new year with many changes. Rest assured, the General Committee, working together with Management, will continue to ensure an optimal club experience for our Members while providing a healthy work environment for our Staff. In the midst of this period of adjustment, I would like to take this oppor tunity to emphasize the positive aspects of recent developments. First and foremost, we have had 211 new Members join our Club community since the circuit breaker lifted - a warm welcome to all of you! Since his arrival, our new General Manager, Rick Coate, has hit the ground running with his Listening and Learning tours to gain Members and Staff feedback. We have enormous confidence in Rick’s leadership and ability to enhance member experience and to smoothly run the operations of The Club. Despite the COVID-19 restrictions, The Club is still vibrant and bustling. Your patience and suppor t for The Club through the renovations and the pandemic has and will continue to make our Club truly a place where we can call our ' home away from home' . Our Staff displayed resilience and commitment during this difficult period, and we wish to thank them for their dedication. For 2021 and beyond, it is impor tant for us to hear from all of you - our Members. For example: based on the feedback received, you will soon see a new paint color for the walls (as
voted on by Members and highly anticipated), as well as more green foliage to brighten our poolside. You may have already noticed an improvement in the F&B outlets and some price adjustments within the Club, although much remains to be done. Only with your voices will we know how to prioritize and deliver on Member expectations. To this end, we are re- star ting Member sur veys. Your feedback and ideas are valued and appreciated. Member engagement and ‘bringing the fun back’ is key for us this year - in person or vir tual; even with limited group size, we will tr y our best to make this happen for our Club community. We are also working on providing clear and transparent communication so that all Members are informed about not only the many events at our Club, but also onThe Club’s financial status along with things that you want to know. Members are now able to obser ve General Committee meetings via Zoom and summar y meeting points will be provided in the What’s On newsletter. Increased transparency and accountability are another change you will obser ve this year. Moving forward, the General Committee’s high-level priorities are: member engagement, strategic planning, improving financial performance and capital reser ves, membership recruitment, and staff well-being. In closing, I sincerely thank you for your continued suppor t and patronage of The American Club Singapore. A Club built on the values of respect, safety, and integrity to be your ‘ home away from home ’. Wishing ever yone a ver y happy, healthy, and prosperous Lunar New Year.
Neetu Mirchandani
1 THE AMERICAN CLUB SINGAPORE
FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
Dear Members We will be ushering in the Year of the Ox on Friday, February 12, 2021. The Ox occupies the second position in the Chinese Zodiac. Those born in theYear of the Ox are diligent, dependable and determined. Oxen are honest and earnest. Our special wishes go out to all those born in the Year of the Ox and Gong Xi Fa Cai! to everyone celebrating the Lunar NewYear. The Team The Annual Staff Holiday Fund or Ang Pow collection is Members’ way of saying “Thank You” to the staff team for the wonderful efforts throughout the year. Thanks to the generosity of our Members, we are very pleased to share that a record 87% of Members contributed to the Staff Holiday Fund. On behalf of all of the Team, thank you, thank you. The new Management structure has provided some empowering opportunities for Department managers to take the next step in their career as Assistant Directors. We now look to a wide collaborative culture for new ideas, efficiencies and levels of teamwork, to deliver services and facilities that exceed your expectations. The General Committee has approved a modest bonus structure for the current financial year which includes all tiers of staff. There is the possibility of increasing the amount of the pool based on the financial performance of the Club against the approved budget. These are extraordinary times. Life under the new COVID-19 normal can be frustrating, challenging, and is applying unprecedented pressures. I sincerely thank Members for being patient and respecting our Staff ’s continued service as The Club sets record numbers for Member attendance as we maintain staffing levels of 272 FTE compared to 330 FTE in the previous year. In the first six months of the (financial) year, we have served over 197,000 meals and welcomed Members and guests over three hundred thousand times. All done safely, socially distanced with a (masked) smile and professionally. Financials Members will be pleased to learn that the Club recorded its first half-yearly profit in almost five years. Gross Operating Profit
(after bonus accrual) of $99k compared to a loss of -$2.36M in the previous year.

Planning The coming months promise to be exciting as the General Committee formulates a Strategic Plan in consultation with Members, Staff, and stakeholders. Management is working closely with the Finance Committee on a five-year forecast with scenarios of business as usual, prolonged pandemic restrictions and a mix of both. We came up with the Club’s first ever Marketing Plan with a focus on Membership recruitment and retention. Did you know? The Smoker by Poolside is actually a giant oven that roasted over 8 tons of turkey and ham from November to December! As always, please reach out to me directly with any questions,
comments or concerns. Sincerely, at your service
Rick Coate

KNOWYOUR SKELETAL MUSCLE INDEX With great knowledge comes great power, read on to find out why knowing your Skeletal Muscle Index is important for you. Did you know that apar t from obesity, many countries are now facing another health problem? With poor diet and lifestyle habits, the elderly population is experiencing a progressive age-related skeletal muscle disorder, sarcopenia (muscle wasting). Sarcopenia accelerates the loss of muscle mass and strength, and will lead to outcomes like mobility decline, instability, and even mor tality. It is vital to keep healthy as our skeletal muscle, which accounts for 40% of total body weight, deteriorates quantitatively and qualitatively with aging. Changes in Muscle Mass and Muscle Strength with age based on 40s Age (yr) Loss of muscle mass Loss of muscle strength Until 70 8% per decade 10% - 15% per decade After 70 15% per decade 25% - 40% per decade The term Skeletal Muscle Index (SMI) was created to diagnose sarcopenia. SMI denotes the muscle mass of an individual based on kg/m2. • Sarcopenia was defined as SMI; * Below 7.0 kg/m2 in men * Below 5.7 kg/m2 in women. • Any ratio higher than the specified cut-off rate (below 7.0 kg/m2 in men and below 5.7 kg/m2 in women) is considered healthy. The prevention and improvement of sarcopenia is age-adapted safe and progressive resistance (strength) training in combination with nutritional interventions can increase the cross-sectional area and function of muscle fibers. The higher the value of SMI, the stronger is the person. Want to know your SMI? Visit or call the Sports Counter at 6739-4312 to book your complimentary 15-minute body composition test to find out your SMI result.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE DAUGHTER Tenealle Fasala follows in her father, Greg Fasala’s footsteps and is set to be making waves in the Australian Women’s water polo train-on squad.
It’s not everyday you get to be in the same household as an Olympic Silver medalist and an Australian Women’s water polo member. Welcome to the Fasala. The Club’s Coach Greg’s daughter,Tenealle was selected into the Australian water polo squad, Australian Stingers, and is now preparing for the next Olympic Games. We asked Coach Greg on his thoughts about his daughter's selection in the team and how he feels about the possibility of her par ticipation in the games. “I'm so proud of her achievements; the oppor tunity to represent your country is always an honor and to be selected to train and be par t of this team is a fantastic milestone for her,” he shares. The Australian Stingers is made up of a number of seasoned and experienced players that have represented their country for decades. Some players that are trying out for this year's team, if successful, will be their four th Olympics.
“Tenealle is the youngest player to be selected, so the experience and skills she will learn from these great players around her will serve her well in the future. As her dad and a coach, I am so pleased and although I can’t be with her to give her a hug of congratulations on making the squad, we are constantly on Zoom calls. I am following her trainings and condition the best I can. I’m keeping my fingers crossed - Tenealle has three main training camps over the coming months before the final selection of the official Olympic team,” says Coach Greg. The Club congratulates and wishes all the best for Tenealle.

We receive feedback from hundreds of our Members each month. Positive or constructive, your comments are important in helping us assess our services and offerings, and enable us to identify ways to better meet your needs. Read on for a selection of our most recent Member feedback.
FEEDBACK: Please open the Scotts Road turnstile. It is not convenient for Members, and if it’s for safety, closing it makes no difference. Even shopping malls such as ION Orchard, Far East Plaza and Shaw Centre opened up their back doors. I really don’t understand why there is a need to close the back door. RESPONSE: Thank you for writing in your request to open up the Scotts Road turnstile. We’re pleased to inform you that the Scotts Road turnstile is open only for exiting. This is in compliance with the entry restrictions imposed on public spaces including malls and lifestyle hubs. Closing the Scotts Road turnstile is to regulate the flow of Members and Guests. This also ensure that the mandatory SE process and compulsory temperature checks are done. Both processes require visual checks by our staff prior to allowing Member and Guests to proceed further into the Clubhouse. These visual checks are mandated by the Authorities. Your safety is our number one priority.
