PRESIDENT FROM THE
I recently came across an interesting quote on the wallpaper of a quirky hotel I had spent a few days at in Amsterdam. In essence, it said, “Problems are nothing more than opportunities.” The phrase stuck with me for some reason and, as I pondered it over the next few days, I couldn’t help but reflect upon both its truth and its ambiguity. Indeed, one person’s problem is often another person’s opportunity to provide a solution. With this in mind, and at what I have to say is one of the most challenging periods of the redevelopment project thus far, I’d like to thank numerous, almost countless, Members of The Club for stepping up to provide their time, talents and thoughts selflessly, freely, and without any expectation of compensation or recognition. I am particularly thankful to those who’ve cooperatively and openly challenged the team when they, based on their experience, think we’re about to walk off a cliff. Conflict in those situations, managed openly through debate and with mutual respect, should after all result in better solutions and is something to be sought out, not avoided. And that is exactly what we’ve tried to do with the 16 focus group sessions we’ve had, the many surveys we’ve run, and the sometimes seemingly endless Design Review Committee (DRC), Project Control Group (PCG), and General Committee (GC) meetings we’ve held for the project. Through these mechanisms we’ve gotten a lot of information. And now, going back to my statement about being in the middle of a challenging period, we are continuing to act upon it. One of the biggest struggles with a project of this nature is the endless possibilities it presents. We could, for example, have decided to build a five-story building on Scott’s Road, tear down the Claymore building, and put in a parking lot…although I doubt even that would have ended complaints about parking (that’s a joke). Alternatively we could have (and did) consider leaving things largely as they are, but instead, decided on something different – building a flatter building with pools on the roof. But now comes the hard part: the details. This is where the hardest work and the most debate will
come into play as everyone will have an opinion that we (the GC and volunteers leading this effort as well as the professional consultants we’re working with) will sort through and compile, knowing full well that it’s impossible to please every Member about every aspect of the project. This is not to say that we won’t do our very best; it’s simply a reflection of the fact that satisfying everyone and fulfilling everyone’s objectives, dreams, and subjective desires about each facet of the project is just impossible. Indeed what we are ultimately trying to do is to create a facility together that meets the majority of Members’ needs and desires in as many areas as possible. So, where are we and what happens next? In August, we finished the schematic design for the project.* Many Member volunteers, committee members, management, and our consultants were meeting throughout the summer to finesse and finalize this phase of the project. The schematic design moves us from the master plan (which designates the location of outlets without any design detail) to more detailed room layouts that include indicative furniture arrangements. You will see restroom layouts identifying the number of toilets, showers, and changing rooms being provided, as well as the number of rooms and their functional layouts within the spa, youth, and gym areas. You will not, however, see the colors of the chairs or even their styling yet. That part is yet to come. The GC met in August to consider and approve the schematic design. We expect to share this design with Members in Town Halls at the end of August/early September. It will also be available to all Members for viewing at The Club and via the redevelopment e-blast. With this complete, the development will then move to detailed design planning where committees begin to talk about finishes, floor treatments, wall coverings and the like. Once that is complete, months from now, The Club will move into the interior design of the spaces.
In tandem with the development of the detailed design we continue to prepare for Phase 2 of the redevelopment

project – demolition. As you know, we closed The Club pool on July 31 so that it could be decommissioned over the following weeks in preparation for demolition. Management moved the pool furniture and equipment and drained the pool in early August. We know that for many of you the pool is an integral part of your membership, so please remember that The Hollandse Club pool opened on August 1 for Member usage, and on August 2, Members could start using the Bukit Merah Swimming Complex. Until our new pool is ready The Club will conduct its swimming lessons, swim team practice and Master’s swimming program at Bukit Merah. Demolition of the Scotts Road building will commence towards the end of August to early September. The Club will start to close outlets and services in that building relatively soon**. The Bowling Alley will soon close until 2018 and the Business Center and Libraries will move to their new permanent home on Level 3. The Youth space, administration office and community partner offices (AAS and AWA) will find a temporary home in B1, and our wine shop HOME will move its high end wines to The 2 nd Floor for sale and its more affordable wines to the converted space across from the current convenience store. In addition, hoarding will be put up along the back of the Claymore building (at Eagle’s Nest, The 2 nd Floor, and Level 3 windows, as well as the linkway) to prepare the pool area for demolition. The linkway (after Thyme as you walk towards the Library) will be partitioned and
closed, though new seating and comfy spaces will be available at Level 3 when it opens.
Beginning late September, the demolition crew expects to begin the “soft strip” of the Scotts Road building. During this phase they’ll remove the non-structural elements of the building. The soft-strip will take several weeks and will prepare the building for demolition in Q4. Prior to commencement of the demolition, The Club expects to install a camera so that we will be able to share regularly updated time-lapse videos of the demolition and construction of the space. As you can see, this is a very busy and important time in the project, and I appreciate all your volunteering, feedback, and comments as we strive to make The Club more enjoyable for all our Members. GENERAL MANAGER FROM THE
It’s great to see all of you back in The Club after summer holidays. A lot has happened since many of you left for vacation, and we are excited to welcome the changes that have already begun. One thing that hasn’t changed is our commitment to our staff. We have long known and appreciated that our team members are the cornerstone of our success. Their “can do” attitudes, friendly smiles, and warm demeanors make them an integral part of your experience at The Club. This is a sentiment we often hear repeated by Members in our daily interactions; and as Members leave, many often cite our team as the aspect they will miss most about The Club. As the hospitality sector in Singapore continues to become more competitive, we will persist in focusing on our team, as the service they provide you is the only real way to differentiate ourselves from our competitors. We are continually investing in the training, education, and development of our team members so that they can continue to grow and add value to The Club. We are very fortunate to have numerous loyal staff who have stayed with The Club for decades. Many of you know Chef Tan from the production kitchen, Betty from Essentials, and Sa’at from The 2 nd Floor, who have all served more than 30 years each. Another of our long-serving staff, Lan Fah, has been with The Club for 34 years. She has been a gem of an employee and a consistent part of our housekeeping team, always ready with a smile as she greets Members in the hallways. She is retiring at the age of 72, and I hope you will join me in wishing her well as she enjoys some well-deserved rest. You may have noticed some new faces around The Club since you’ve been back. It gives me great pleasure to introduce a slew of new talent to our family. We introduced our new Senior Beverage Director Alvin Gho as well as our Principal Indian Cuisine Chef, Shetty Rama in the last issue of our magazine. Alvin is hard at work as we continue to expand our growing wine program, and Shetty is now based at Eagle’s Nest overseeing the enhancement of our Indian cuisine offerings during the redevelopment. Thyme Café has also welcomed two new baristas, Lead Barista Rosimah Manan and Junior Barista Nithiyah Perumal. These women are both trained in latte art, and have already garnered quite the following among our
Members. If you haven’t met them yet, please say hello the next time you are grabbing a coffee.
In the fitness world we welcomed new Fitness and Leisure Director Randy Simon and Aquatics Manager Elspeth Lilburne this summer. Randy, who originally hails from Ohio, joins us from his most recent post in Egypt, where he worked as the General Manager for one of the world’s largest swimming programs, overseeing 16,000 swimmers and a coaching and administrative staff of 400 across 5 locations. El, who grew up as an expat in Bahrain, most recently worked on the Gold Coast of Australia as the Manager of the Superfish Swim Schools; she will be heading up The Club’s Starfish Swim School programs. We are happy to have them both on the team. Behind the scenes we have recently welcomed new Quality Assurance/Food Hygiene Manager Cynthia Tan and Events Manager May Cheng, who will both contribute to making sure our operations run smoothly. Cynthia will be working with our kitchen team to ensure The Club continues to meet and exceed Singapore’s increasingly strict food preparation standards, while May will be creating and executing the wide-ranging events you have come to know and love at The Club. Finally, I encourage you to read about some highlights of the new Level 3 in the Redevelopment section of this magazine. There, you will find a short write-up about our new Level 3 Manager Andrew Bastian. Many of you will meet Andrew this month as Level 3 opens; please take a moment to introduce yourselves and welcome him to The Club family. Our long-standing and unwavering commitment to our Members and staff make The American Club the exceptional community it is today. I hope that our continual efforts to add to, and dedication to nurturing, our quality pool of talent translates into extraordinary experiences for you. Monzie IS OUR 2016 NATIONAL MOCKTAIL CHAMPION! Congratulations to Monzie Danial from Union Bar, who did us proud by bagging the top prize in the Mocktail Category at the 28th National Cocktail Competition 2016! Organized by the Association of Bartenders & Sommeliers Singapore, the Mocktail competition saw 17 contestants vying for the top prize in two challenging rounds held over two days in June. Contestants were required to create a mocktail using an original recipe that would be evaluated on creativity, bartending skills, presentation and taste. Monzie’s concoction, a refreshing blend of soursop puree, pineapple puree, strawberry puree and lychee juice, sealed the deal for the judges and saw him emerging as the grand winner.
He named his drink Mi Corazon , which means ‘my love’ in Spanish, after his wife!

At The Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on November 11, 2015, changes to Article 20(f) of The Constitution were presented and approved, and subsequently endorsed by the Registry of Societies.
In line with the new Article 20(f): • The Club will no longer be sending printed copies of the Annual Report to each Member via post. • An electronic version of the Annual Report shall be sent to each principal Member (other than Members on absent status) via electronic mail no less than 40 days before each AGM. • The Annual Report will also be available on The Club’s website via a Member log-in account. • Limited printed copies of the Annual Report will be made available at the Concierge. Membership Office and Library upon request.
The above changes were sought to align The Club with standard market practice, save printing and postage costs and facilitate our on-going efforts to go green.
The electronic Annual Report (e-report) will be sent to the Principal email address currently linked to your membership account in our records. To ensure successful delivery of the e-report, you are reminded to housekeep your e-mail account regularly.

The AGM provides Eligible Members with an opportunity to vote six Members on to the General Committee for a two-year tenure, approve and/or ask questions about the Audited Accounts for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2016, as well as appoint The Club’s Auditors for the next twelve months. Voting and discussions will also take place on any other business that is properly presented as prescribed by the Constitution. This year, we have several proposed constitutional changes as recommended by the Rules Committee and approved by the General Committee. There will also be an update about the Redevelopment project.

Highlights of the evening included two exciting F1 race car simulators, an amazing line-up of staff talent performances, lucky draw prizes, and all round energy as the DJ spun dynamic music through the night. Most importantly, we took the occasion to acknowledge the commitment and loyalty of many of our long-serving staff who achieved significant milestone years of service at The Club. Notably, Executive Sous Chef Gee Sey Tan received a standing ovation for his 45 years of service with us! We also honored many other outstanding staff – the ‘Rookie of the Year’ award went to Francis Kuan (Essentials) while the ‘GM's Award’ went to Lau Kok Foo (Engineering). Meanwhile, Sun Jialei (Stewarding), Anthony Pabalan (Front Office) and Mavis Julian (Sports Counter) received the coveted ‘Employee of the Year’ awards. We thank all Members for their wonderful support of our staff engagement initiatives and for acknowledging our staff’s commitment to the Club community.
On August 1, The Club hosted its Staff Dinner & Dance 2016 at the Pan Pacific Singapore in signature American Club pizzazz! It was indeed an affair to remember as our team enjoyed a sensational night that saw our record highest number of 352 staff turning up for the Black & White 007 themed event.

THE AMERICAN CLUB REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT
THE MASTER PLAN The Club finalized the master plan for the redevelopment in June. This plan shows where each outlet will be located once the redevelopment is complete, but does not show any design elements or square footage allocations. These plans and FAQs are posted in the Linkway at The Club as well.
MAIN STREET CONCEPT
The Club is creating a “main street” through the clubhouse across all the levels to make access between spaces easier. This eliminates the need for a long, empty linkway, and allows The Club to utilize its Gross Floor Area more effectively. It should also allow Members to access different outlets more easily. KITCHEN CONNECTIVITY
EDG, The Club’s F&B consultant, stressed the need for a centralized kitchen to make food preparation, delivery, and service quicker and more efficient. This master plan connects each outlet with a kitchen for this purpose and is the reason that some restaurants are moving from their current locations.

HOLLANDSE CLUB OVERVIEW With the closure of The Club pool and Poolside restaurant at the end of July, we are pleased to announce alternate pool facilities for Members at Hollandse Club and Bukit Merah Swimming Complex. HOLLANDSE CLUB POOL ACCESS Pool access at the Hollandse Club began on August 1 and will be available to Members all through the redevelopment. Access to the Hollandse Club gives Members an additional venue for recreational swimming, and offers Members a club-like atmosphere with access to food and beverage options in a convenient location.
Some points to note: • Members will be required to show their membership cards at time of entry. Please be reminded to bring your cards for all family Members. • Members (and their guests) will be required to sign in and wear a guest bracelet while at the Hollandse Club. • Members will be able to bring up to four guests with them free of charge. Additional guests will be subject to guest fees. • Members will be able to purchase food and beverages at guest prices at the Hollandse Club. Bills must be settled at the time of purchase by NETS, credit card, or check. • Swim lessons will not be conducted at the Hollandse Club. All American Club swim lessons will be held at the Bukit Merah Swimming Complex. What are the operating hours of The Hollandse Club? The Hollandse Club is open Sunday to Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to midnight. Friday, Saturday, and Eve of Public Holidays from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Which outlets can I use? American Club Members will have access to the Hollandse Club’s restaurants and swimming pool. Can I participate in other activities and classes organized by The Hollandse Club and if so, is there a cost associated with this? Members cannot participate in Hollandse Club classes but do have access to activities and events organized for non-members paying the quoted non-member fees.
What is the guest rate? Guest entry fee is applicable for each guest in excess of 4. The current guest rate is $2.50/person, but this rate is being reviewed and may change in the future. Is there parking at The Hollandse Club? Yes, you can park your vehicle in the designated visitor parking spaces based upon availability. Parking is currently free of charge, however, this may change in the future. Will The Club be arranging shuttle bus service to The Hollandse Club? No, there will not be shuttle bus service to the Hollandse Club. Does the Hollandse Club have towels or do I need to bring my own? The Hollandse Club has towels for Member and guest usage. Are Members able to bring their helpers to the Hollandse Club? Domestic helpers are only allowed on the Hollandse Club’s premises in cases when parents are not able to accompany their children. They are not allowed to use the facilities, and are permitted to wait for Members’ children only in the designated areas, outside the Rotterdam room, the tennis pavilion, and at the tables at the poolside, next to the main stairs when entering the pool. Can Junior Members use the Hollandse Club facilities without the primary Member? All card carrying Members of the family can use the facilities. Children below 11 are not allowed to enter the premises unaccompanied. Does the Hollandse Club have a baby pool? Yes, there is a wading pool at the Hollandse Club

UNVEILING LEVEL 3! Level 3 is being unveiled in September, and we are excited to welcome you to the newly conceptualized space. This area offers more than just the existing Business Center and Library services; it has a rentable event space, a reading area, a silent TV tuned to business news, a grab-and-go F&B area, a variety of seating options, spaces for subdued conversations, phone booths, meeting rooms, the libraries, quiet work stations, and more. This new level was designed to appeal to a variety of users who use different areas in The Club currently. The goal was to create a space that would entice current and potential users, so that The Club is not merely re-creating spaces in new locations, but rather future-proofing the facilities for the years to come. The Club is happy to welcome Andrew Bastian to the team, as the new manager of Level 3. Andrew comes to The Club from the Compass Group where he was the Hospitality Manager managing JP Morgan Chase Bank’s client, corporate, and F&B portfolios. Andrew has extensive experience working in the high-end hospitality industry including at the Shangri La Hotel, Sheraton, and The Sentosa Resort and Spa. In these roles, he managed all event catering, selection and dining solutions for conference room bookings and corporate events management. Do introduce yourself to Andrew and his team when you visit Level 3. READING SPACE Many Members will be pleased to have a quiet and comfortable place to enjoy reading the paper, browsing the latest bestseller, or reading on their device. This reading space has different seating options and plenty of natural light, making it a quiet alternative. With its flexible furnishings, this space can be converted into a rentable event space for Members looking to host an event such as a business talk, book club meeting, or networking event. FOOD, FOOD, FOOD One of the many new aspects of Level 3 is the grab-and-go food area. Chef Malik and his team have created a rotating menu of delicious sandwiches, wraps, salads, and more, making it easy to have a nutritious snack or tuck into a simple meal. This area, complete with a commercial-grade Nespresso coffee maker, will allow Members to serve themselves. CHECK IT OUT! We’re happy to announce the Library will have a self-checkout station when it opens on Level 3. You may have seen and used this technology at the National Libraries; it is simple and convenient to use. This station not only makes the checkout process easier for Members, it also frees up our staff to help Members with queries, reshelf books, and keep the library running smoothly.

COMMITTEE FEATURE
The Member-owned structure of The American Club provides ample opportunities for Members to participate in Club life by serving on one of 19 Committees. These committees help chart the course for The Club by working closely with The Club’s Management to set policies and procedures that help to ensure The Club remains a successful, thriving and vibrant community.
The Club’s Library is an immense treasure trove of books, DVDs, audio-books and magazines. To a large extent, this is the result of decades of efforts by volunteer members who make up The Club’s Library Sub-Committee. The Library Sub-Committee’s goal is to provide an updated collection of reading materials to meet the recreational reading needs of The American Club Members, including adults, young adults and children. The Committee also works on an ongoing basis with The Club’s Library staff to set library policies, select and procure library materials, manage the library budget, and develop library programs which promote reading while providing a quiet, comfortable environment for the enjoyment of Club Members. Some of these programs include readings by authors and volunteers, used book sales, coloring contests, holiday book sales, Top of the Shelf reading lists, book suggestions and a paperback exchange. Currently, the Library Committee consists of 9 Members, each in charge of providing up-to-date material for specific sections of the library and dedicated to making the space the best it can be.
