FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Members,

Summer has arrived bringing with it lazy days and nights filled with picnics, fireworks, laughter, sandy beaches, and good friends. As the author Jenny Han wrote, "Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August", and whether you are in Singapore, your hometown, or elsewhere, I hope you are enjoying every minute of this magical season! At The Club, summertime means fantastic programs such as the Stars n' Stripes Summer Camp, an extensive variety of swim activities, and expanded tennis labs in addition to the usual offerings. It also means that with many of our members traveling, it can be slightly quieter around the Clubhouse, creating an excellent opportunity for you to get to know Club staff a bit better. Did you know that Afieq in F&B has a baby on the way and that Diana moved to Thinkspace from the Concierge? Next time you are at The Club please be sure to take a minute to find out more about our staff and thank them for all of the work they do to make The Club our home away from home. Although our Clubhouse home may be a bit quieter over the summer months, Management, staff, and Club volunteers continue to work tirelessly to open new spaces. Members have been enjoying the recently opened Lobby area, and many back-of- house areas have also opened in the past month, including the staff cafeteria and locker rooms. In addition, Tradewinds will soft launch for Members over the summer holiday period. Once we open these beautiful new spaces, the team's focus will turn to the Gym. I understand that this area and the adjoining locker rooms are important to Members, and we are all excited to begin using the new Gym spaces. The contractors and their teams are also making progress on The Gourmet Pantry, and we

plan to open both of these areas to Members before September.

As we enter the final phases of redevelopment, I would like to continue to ask for your patience as we work towards opening the full Clubhouse this fall. Please know that we are committed to creating a Club you are proud of and enjoy using, and I can't thank you enough for the graciousness and understanding you have shown during this period. I look forward to seeing you and your family at The Club, and I hope that your summer is a magical one!

Warm regards,

Dana Hvide

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members,

Summer is a time to recharge – from holidays with loved ones back in the US, Canada or anywhere else friends and families may gather, to short trips around the region and taking time off to reset your pace, summer is the perfect season to take a breather. With many of our expatriate Members gone for these few months, it is also a good time for The Club to take a step back, take stock of our progress and tie up loose ends. Our redevelopment project has been (and still is) a long and arduous journey, but we are reaching the light at the end of the tunnel. Our membership fees were frozen during the past three years of redevelopment because we know that the disruptions brought about by redevelopment inevitably inconvenienced the community. The majority of our new outlets have launched, and in the last few years The Club has introduced new programs, initiatives and events like our complimentary Back to School Parents Edition, aqua aerobics classes and revamped Niche Group parties. You’ll be pleased to know that the open market value of The Club’s transferable membership category has risen steadily over the years, which alludes to our premier positioning within the market. Coupled with the anticipated completion of redevelopment, the General Committee has approved the Membership Committee’s recommendation to revise the Associate Membership entrance fee (an increment of $13,375), transfer fee for open market transfers (an increment of $3425) and Term Membership entrance fee (an increment of $321). The membership brokers have been informed of the price revisions. Please flip to page 12 for more information on the revised fees.

friends during this unique period. Whether they are fresh transplants or expatriates who have been in Singapore for a while, there’s never been a better time to join The Club. From now until December 31, get an upsized bonus via our WIN/WIN+ membership referral program and receive up to a total of $750 F&B dining vouchers each for both the existing Member and new Member. For more information, please flip to page 53. In addition, summer is when The Club’s team members get to have some fun. Our annual gala employee dinner and awards presentation will take place on Monday, July 29 at the Grand Hyatt Singapore. The Club will be closed at 3:00 p.m. on that day so our staff can get ready for this exciting event. As with Club tradition, several of our team members will be recognized for making outstanding service contributions to The Club. Among the event’s highlights will also be the presentation of long service awards – we have staff celebrating 40, 25 and 20 years of service! This group of individuals has shown unwavering loyalty to The Club, and if you’ve been long-time Members (as my family is), you’ll probably be familiar with them. As the dust from redevelopment starts to settle, and as we reach the tail end of this massive project, I hope you will remember that The Club is more than its façade, facilities and programs. It’s the people – both Members and staff – who form the heart of this community, and is what makes this place a home away from home for so many of us.

Best Regards,

We’d also like to take this chance to reward our existing Members who continue to recommend The Club to their

Our inaugural experiential food & beverage event, TASTE, on Saturday, May 18 was a treat for gastronomes. Prior to redevelopment, The Club held wine fairs – Premium Wine Tasting and Affair of the Vine – every 6 months which were immensely popular. TASTE presented an elevated twist to our wine fairs with the addition of 12 external food & beverage vendors, and a delightful buffet spread prepared by The Club. Members sampled gourmet products between sips of fine wine and took home their favorites at attractive prices. Participating vendors: Angra Wine & Spirit, Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore, Cellar Master Wine, EC Proof, Gain Brands, House of Rum, Indoguna, Kirei Japanese Food Supply, La Petite Boutique, The Straits Wine Company Singapore, Water & Wine and Wine Culture

5 PAIN POINTS OF OWNING A CAR IN SINGAPORE

U nlike in the U.S, owning a car in Singapore is more expensive and full of hassle. The pain of owning a car in Singapore is amplified for expats. Yet, many still choose to own a car due to its convenience. But before you jump right into buying a car, you should consider the other options available. Here’s why a Car Subscription is better than owning a car in Singapore.

1. Length of Stay Knowing how long you’ll be in Singapore is important to make your decision. If you’ll be here for less than a year, you shouldn’t commit to a big investment. You’ll be better off subscribing to a car. If you’ll be here for more than 5 years, then buying your own car is worth it. Still, that’s a big and risky investment to make! 2. Big “Investment” Everyone knows how expensive it is to own a car in Singapore . COE premiums cost a bomb and you’ll need to fork out cash for the downpayment. On top of your monthly loan repayment, there’s also the road tax, insurance and maintenance costs! But that’s not all, on average, your car depreciates $1,000 a month! Which means you’ll be spending a lot on something that loses value by the day. 3. Hassle of Selling a Car As an expat, selling your car is all about the right timing. Finding a good deal for your car takes up a lot of time and effort. You’d probably take a few months just to sell your car at a reasonable price. Imagine how it’ll be like if you’re leaving the country… Sell your car too early and risk being left with no transport for your family, sell too late and you won’t be around to facilitate the sale. 4. Is it worth it? For many, having a car is for convenience, especially if you have kids. But if you travel overseas a lot, then maybe buying a car is not a good idea. You won’t be using your car to the fullest and the money could be used on better things in life, like a holiday.

5. Long Term Commitment Owning a car is not only a big financial “investment” but also a long term commitment. But what happens if there’s an emergency and you need to fly home? Or if your financial situation changes and you can’t afford to keep the car? If you own a car, you’ll face the time-consuming and troublesome process of selling your car. If you’re leasing a car and you terminate your contract early, you’ll incur a high penalty. It’s restrictive and inconvenient. As an expat, you need a flexible, hassle-free and economical car ownership experience. Instead, the traditional way of car ownership is stressful and has a lot of restrictions, penalties and hefty sums. But with car subscriptions, you can enjoy a commitment- free, flexible and affordable (from just $1,499/month) experience. There’s no downpayment to worry about, just a 100% refundable deposit to get started. Enjoy the freedom to drive with no contract to tie you down. You can easily cancel, return or switch cars every month, penalty-free. Monthly fees are all-inclusive, covering everything you need - insurance, road tax, maintenance and 24/7 roadside assistance. These benefits make car ownership a breeze and fit your expat lifestyle perfectly. Owning a car will never be easier! A Painless Car Ownership Experience

If you’d like to experience the future of car ownership, visit carro.sg today.

F.A.Q. 1. When will The Gourmet Pantry open?

The Gourmet Pantry was originally slated to open with the Tennis Gallery in TOP 4, but due to the progress on the space it was moved forward to TOP 2B with the Gym. We anticipate this phase will open before September. 2. Where will The Gourmet Pantry be located? Off of the Lobby, near the staircase. This prime location will allow Members convenient access to the curated meat, cheese, and wine. 3. What is the difference in products between The Gourmet Pantry and Essentials? Once The Gourmet Pantry opens, Essentials will take over the space occupied by HOME after a minor renovation. Essentials will continue to carry every day sundry items such as bread, milk, and beverages, as well as Club and sports merchandise. Services such as laundry and courier will remain at Essentials. The Gourmet Pantry will focus on wine and higher end goods.

MEMBER FEATURE

HOME is where the heart is

From hanging out at the Soda Shop in the 70s to chilling at Grillhouse now, Susan Studebaker-Rutledge has seen The Club through its major transformations. After spending so many wonderful years in Singapore, it’s no wonder Susan finds it incredibly difficult to bid goodbye to The Club this July. Read on for a snippet of her enriching Club life! Tell us about your Club journey I moved to Singapore in 1975 and joined the Singapore American School (SAS) as an 8th grader. Although my family was immersed in the American community, we were not Members immediately. However, my friends at SAS were at The Club all the time, so I tagged along! It was only in 1978 when my mother, Karen Studebaker, became a Member. My mother served as Secretary and Vice President of The Club in the 80s – in fact, she was the first female secretary that served on the board. My mother left Singapore for Hawaii after that, but I continued my journey at The Club when I joined as a Member in my own right. Fun fact – my husband was also a Member of The Club but we only got attached when we met in college in the States! What are some of your fondest memories at The Club? I loved the Soda Shop the most – it was the youth area for teenagers back in the 70s. The Soda Shop was modelled after shops in the states which sold milkshakes with a bar top. The space was exclusive to teenagers and was decorated with booths and tables in red and white. It was the place to be and where all the young people hung out. I miss the hamburgers and French dip at the Soda Shop the most. The Bowling Alley in the 70s (also the very first bowling alley in Singapore) was packed every night and was another place in The Club where everyone would congregate. We had lots of bowling socials, and families would gather there every weekend. What will you miss most about The Club? There’s so much I will miss – the food, our routines, all the memories I have here with my family and the friendly TAC staff who are like family to us. My husband and I, together with our daughter Asia (who’s currently in the States), attend Sunday brunch at the ballroom almost every weekend. It’s our family tradition. The Club has the best deal for Sunday brunches in town in terms of selection and value, and it’s always nice to bump into familiar faces and catch up with staff. Some of the long-time staff like Dahlan, Rich and Nicole have been close to my family for ages. Now that Asia is 18,

15 | TAC

she’s so excited to visit the Union Bar and catch up with Henry – who used to babysit her at the old Eagle’s Nest! I will also miss Grillhouse a lot. I’m originally from Oklahoma and my husband is from Texas, so the menu at Grillhouse is perfect for us. The staff there know our orders by heart and I find the space really lovely at night with the low lighting on the tables. It’s a new hangout place for us and our favorite dinner place in Singapore. It’s comforting to be at The Club – I don’t have to think about what I want, the service is wonderful and it is truly a home away from home for us.

We bid a fond farewell to Susan and her husband Greg, who moved home to Oklahoma in July. While we’ll certainly miss seeing her around The Club, we are so excited for them to begin their new journey! They will always have a home at The American Club.

STAFF FEATURE

IN GOOD HANDS

A lot has changed over the years; from The Club’s façade, to our Orchard Road neighborhood, you’ll be hard pressed to find over the past few decades.

The Club has changed significantly over the past few decades, Abdul from Aquatics remains a comforting and familiar face at The Club. From catching up with visiting families, chatting with current Members and welcoming new Members to our home away from home, Abdul’s popularity among Members and staff alike never wanes. Read on to find out more about his journey at The Club! What is your current role at The Club?

I started my journey in August 1993 as a Lifeguard. I was subsequently promoted to Senior Lifeguard, Pool Supervisor, Pool Manager and my current role is Chief Lifeguard. As Chief Lifeguard, I plan the schedules and rosters of all full-time and part-time lifeguards, and help out at Aquatics events. When I’m not on duty, you can find me around the pools either answering Members’ questions or simply catching up with them. Other than Chief Lifeguard, what other roles have you held at The Club? I’m heavily involved in safety at The Club, especially in regard to first-aid and emergency response. I’m part of the Crisis Management Team that develops procedures and protocols in the event of emergencies such as accidents and terrorism threats. In the past, I managed all 25 first aid boxes around The Club and ensured that all fire extinguishers and hose reels are in good working condition. This task was physically demanding and a huge

responsibility that has thankfully been passed on to the Duty Managers and security officers. I currently oversee all lifesaving equipment in The Club, including the AED machine, oxygen cylinder, bag valve mask and pulse oximeters. I also conduct monthly trainings for staff who are first-aiders. Any memorable moments at The Club? Back in 1994, an incident happened which inspired me to make first aid and safety the focus of my career. A Member’s 7-year-old daughter choked on her pizza at the poolside. It was the first time something like this has ever happened under my watch and I was the first rescuer on scene. Fortunately, the little girl was alright, but the event left an indelible mark on me. I requested to the then Sports & Leisure Director Mr Mark Holland that I would like to attend first aid courses, and that each front line department should have qualified first aiders to ensure our Members are always well taken care. On a lighter note, I fondly recall a time when Members pranked me by making a commotion at the pool and tricking me into thinking that there was an emergency. I rushed to the pool ready to leap into action. To my surprise, they held up alphabet cards to spell out my name while in the pool! I was extremely touched by the effort they went through for this surprise as each letter had to be laminated separately! What does The Club mean to you? To work at The Club means to have a fun working environment where I get to meet and interact with many people from all walks of life. I also enjoy being around children. They keep me young at heart and remind me to always appreciate the little things in life. It’s especially rewarding to watch them grow up over the years.

Abdul will be receiving his long service award at the Staff Dinner & Dance on Monday, July 29 for 25 years of service to The Club. Join us in congratulating Abdul on his milestone achievement!
