For this Summer’s edition of On Eagle’s Wings, we reminisce our most precious summer memories. Our cover was inspired by a quick weekend getaway with all the essentials in tow. Health is wealth. In this issue, read up on how to supercharge healthy cooking with a few simple tips from Director of Food & Beverage, Dan Durkin. Read the story of Club Team Members - Sr. Director of Finance Angie and Swim Coach Rodel, as they take a step towards good health through the National Steps Challenge. My favorite summer memory is when my sister and I shared an ice cream, four hands holding a large waffle cone, dripping with chocolate and strawberry dribble. My sister being the selfless one would only lick the melted drips, leaving me with the best par ts. Recalling this memory now melts my hear t. Here’s to making summer memories that will last a lifetime.

which oversees our two retail outlets –The Gourmet Pantr y and Essentials. This summer, the Schindler family plans to explore Singapore’s West Coast on their bikes and give archery a try. Alex Zecha has the longest Club membership (30 year s) of al l the GC member s . I fi r st met Alex when I was hosting a show for CNBC. He chair s the Club's Disciplinary Committee and sits on the Strategic Planning Working Group. Alex, called “Eve” by his twin brother and parents, comes from a media and hospitality family background. His tireless uncle, Adrian, is founder of Aman resor ts. This summer, Alex plans to golf through Singapore’s balmy weather to improve his drives in time for the popular American Association’s golf tournament next year. Jill Morgenroth is our Vice President and a “maven” to me when it comes to all things Chicago including its ethnic delicacies. Arriving here in 1995 for a three-month stint, Jill has overstayed her visa by 27 years! The Morgenroths plan to walk and explore the Green Corridor whenever they have the family together. Mathew Welch is an American-educated Englishman. He has been a member of our Club for 26 years. He leads our Strategic Planning Working Group and i s Chai r of our Social & Dining Commi ttee . On Sundays, Mathew is an avid cocktail maker which he’s determined to continue in the summer. Alex Elkies hails from a Scottish background. He is our Treasurer and chairs the Finance Committee. His American wife, Lora, a tax attorney, has sat on several Club committees. Alex plans to cycle right through the summer humidity exploring new cycling paths along the East Coast. Lauren Ullman originates from Nor thern Ireland and works at a hedge fund. She chairs the Youth & Family Committee and sits on the Tennis and Strategic Planning Committees. A member for four year s, Lauren has four children who will continue using the Club whenever they can during the summer. All of our GC Members are wonderful volunteers who contribute many hours of their time and are committed to a "spirit of par tnership" as we work together with management to make our Club the best in Singapore. Wishing everyone a fun summer.

Dear Members, We're all looking forward to a fantastic summer! Our first summer in two years without major COVID-19 restrictions. From what we can tell, many Members plan to spend time in the Club when they're not away on their well-deserved vacations. WHERE MEMBERS BECOME FRIENDS Summers with my family have always revolved around the Club: Four th of July festivities, attending camps, library visits, pool fun and catching up with good friends over a classic burger and chocolate shake by the Pool. Besides being a great place to meet and enter tain old friends, I've always thought of our Club as a place "where Members become friends." Where the Club creates the oppor tunities and we do the rest! For most parents, this seems to happen best when waiting around the pool, The Quad or Taekwondo sessions. It worked well for my family where half of our friends and our children's friends are Club Members. After all, we are a social club! Let's see who we - and our kids - meet this summer! CONTINUING THE "MEET & GREET" SPIRIT The Communications Committee and our Marketing & Communications team par tnered up in March to present the first-ever General Committee (GC) Meet & Greet. Member s were able to meet many GC Members in one vir tual call. It was a success! Along the same lines of getting to know our GC Member s, I ’ve asked the GC to share a bit more about themselves and their summer plans. Linda Schindler is the AmericanWomen Association’s Pres i dent and representat i ve to our GC . A Vietnamese-Amer ican, she was named after the original Wonder Woman, Lynda Car ter, and has a wonder woman’s passion for our Club, programs and food! Linda’s husband, Michael, a former Levi Strauss executive, sits on our Social & Dining Committee

LET’S GET ACTIVE

Summer is a great time to soak up the sun (with sunscreen!) and get active. In this issue, we share what the Club and its Team Members have been up to these past few months. We hope that these stories will motivate you to get up and get moving.

EAGLE Fund 2022 Building a community of support - through the best and worst of times.

Families help each other when times are tough, and The American Club family is no different. In 2015, Club Members raised the idea of an employee relief fund to helpTeam Members in times of hardships and emergencies. Originally known as the Emergency & Education Fund, a formal proposal was put forward to the General Committee and was approved shor tly after to which is now known as the EAGLE (Emergency Access Grant for Club Employees) Fund. Over the years, the EAGLE Fund has helped numerous Team Members alleviate their financial burdens arising from mounting hospitalization bills to homes being destroyed by flash floods, among others. This year, the Aquatics team kicked off the annual EAGLE Fund fundraiser with a Swim- a-thon. 12 teams with a total of 72 swimmers c a m e t o g e t h e r o n a s u n n y S u n d a y i n Februar y to complete their goal of swimming 74 laps per team in a n h o u r. They star ted bright and early at 8:30 a.m. in the morning, spor ting their “EAGLE Fund Suppor ter” swimming caps, and swam their hear ts out. Another first this year, the teams in each category that raised the most amount of money would have their names inscribed onto the EAGLE Fund Shield to be proudly displayed at the Pool. With this incentive in mind, the heat was on. All six teams managed to complete the 74 laps in under an hour and collectively raised an outstanding $6,215, with Team Gold Stripes raising the most money - $1,450 – and securing their place on the Shield.

The main event star ted at 10:30 a.m., with the Masters SwimTeam taking to the waters. Members’ favorites Team Wonder Women and Team Top Gun made a comeback this year, along with a

few new faces such as Team Spice Girls and Team Shaken Not Stirred. We also saw Team Abdul and Team Fasala par ticipating again this year. The competition heated up as the Masters swimmers went head on to see which team could complete the laps in the shor test time.Team Top Gun emerged victorious, and managed to retain the title of “Fastest SwimTeam” from the last Swim-a-thon. Not too far off from the Junior and Senior swim squads, the Masters Swim Team raised a total of $6,720, with Team Abdul raising the most money - $1,650 – and

I also hope that more outlets and depar tments will be involved in this annual event to raise more money for the Fund. A Step in the Right Direction

Team Members step up to achieve better health through the National Steps Challenge.

K eeping fit or being active can be daunting, especial ly when we l ive in such a fast paced society, with work, fami ly and other commitments taking up much of our time. However, studies have shown that even smal l increments of physical activity can lead to significant health improvements. According to the Health Promotion Board, for a sedentar y adult, walking the recommended 7,500 to 10,000 steps dai ly can help lower high blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels, and improve glucose control . To nudge Singaporeans to walk more, the Health Promotion Board introduced the National Steps Chal lenge in 2015 to

encourage people to lead a more active l ifestyle by taking more steps, and rewarding them with voucher s for hitting their dai ly target. Dur ing a recent health sur vey and screening conducted by the Club for its Team Member s, results showed that many Team Member s suffered from high cholesterol and high blood pressure. In response to this, Team Wel lness was formed with the aim of enhancing the health and wel l-being of Team Member s and to bui ld camarader ie through initiatives such as fitness activities, health talks and screening, and mental wel lness programs.

One such fitness activity that Team Wel lness has signed the Club up for is the National Steps Corporate Chal lenge that sees organizations nationwide and inter-company compete against each other based on the highest dai ly average step count. At the end of the 15-week chal lenge, the Club placed 13th in the industr y ranking and 60th in the national ranking.

“Since I am already walking so much ever yday, why not earn myself some voucher s whi le doing so?” Angie on why she decided to take par t in the National Steps Corporate Challenge. Angie has consistently been the Club’s Top 5 “stepper s” week on week since the chal lenge star ted in Januar y, and has no plans on stepping down from the top.

Wonders of BriskWalking

Walking to Good Health

For Lifeguard and Swim Coach, Rodel , his motivation for joining the National Steps Corporate Chal lenge was dr iven by health reasons and his desire to l ive a long l ife. “Although I have been doing different forms of exercise throughout the year s, I l ike the idea of constantly moving and explor ing beautiful scener ies – so I decided to join the National Steps Corporate Chal lenge,” he explained. Three months on, Rodel is the Club’s top stepper week on week, clocking in an average of 30,000 steps a day. Rodel shares, “When I fir st found out about this chal lenge, I shared it with my fr iends and encouraged them to join me so that we can go br isk walking and jogging together.” Rodel ’s go-to br isk walking spots are the Botanic Gardens, Mar ina Bay Sands and MacRitchie Resevoir where he frequents twice a week. As par t of his dai ly routine, he also chooses to take the stair s instead of the l ift at the Club, and walks to the nearby mal ls dur ing his breaks. Apar t from keeping fit, another benefit that he reaped was weight loss – he had shed close to 4kg since embarking on the chal lenge. He also shared that br isk walking has helped him rel ieve stress and get better sleep at night. For those who are sti l l unsure about stepping up to the chal lenge to reap the health benefits, Rodel ’s advice is to “star t slow, do what you can and work your way up. When you star t, it’s actual ly much easier than you’d think – the more you walk, the less lethargic you feel .”

Ever y morning, Senior Director of Finance, Angie, leaves the house at 5:00 a.m. for her morning br isk walk, she straps on her steps tracker to clock the number of steps she wi l l take. On weekday mornings alone, she hits 11,000 to 12,000 steps easi ly as she walks and jogs around the vicinity of her home. Dur ing lunch time, she makes an effor t to get out of the office to clock in more steps. At the end of the day, Angie would have clocked in an average of 20,000 steps, equivalent to walking near ly 15km! A nature lover, Angie unwinds with her fami ly on the weekend by ventur ing to the var ious parks and nature reser ves around Singapore such as Thomson Nature Reser ve, Bedok Reser voir, East Coast Park and Bukit Timah Nature Reser ve. She also gets out of the house to do the occasional weekend grocer y shopping in order to break away from lounging at home al l day. Angie is no stranger to the wor ld of exercise. She star ted exercising dai ly since she was diagnosed with diabetes in 1999. Initial ly, she would do more high impact exercises such as running and cardio activities, but as age caught up with her, she turned to less strenuous forms of exercise such as br isk walking and jogging. “Br isk walking is an easy, convenient and effective way in keeping my blood sugar down. It also helps me maintain a healthy l ifestyle so that I can have the occasional indulgence as I love food,” said Angie.
