Choose the path that is best for you. As the only school in Singapore to offer the choice of A Levels or the IB Diploma in Sixth Form, Tanglin Trust School students can thrive and flourish by studying the programme that most suits them; either the specialist study of three to four subjects or a broad and balanced programme of six subjects. Our students’ examination results are outstanding, consistently surpassing Singapore and global averages, with 95% of graduates typically receiving their first or second choice university, which are among the best in the world. But that’s not the full story. Going to school is also about developing a community of lifelong learners, whether it be through sports, the arts, outdoor education or the multitude of other opportunities students embrace. With the support of our dedicated and experienced staff, everyone gets a chance to find their passion, to be part of our dynamic community, and to achieve their personal best.

The artists of Olive Gallery share their take on our modern world and environment. The artworks express what environment means to them and how they have seen it change. Smrita Swarup paints these beautiful impressionistic water lilies that reflect a fond memory of her childhood. Zakir Hussain 'Tanha' creates closer-to-life surreal artworks which compel the onlooker to dive deep and search for the hidden meanings of existence. Whereas Sanjay Chakraborty has carved a niche for himself with his unique interpretation of the colors and energy of his visions from a town in India. And introducing Saakshi Brahmi, an emerging artist from India, as well as the pillar of Olive Gallery’s team, Sheena Bharatan, who with her art creates her own language. OLIVE GALLERY Launch

Ear th Day fal ls on Apr i l 22, but you don’t have to wait for that day to show Mother Ear th that you care. Here, at The Amer ican Club, we have rol led out several green ways for our sustainable journey. Eat Green Gone are the days when going meat-free means settl ing for a bowl of leafy greens. Now, many restaurants have created dishes using plant-based meat alternatives. So have we. At Gr i l lhouse, chow down on their Impossible Burger - it's so del ish, you wouldn't miss the beef. Or swing by Union Bar for their Korean Fr ied Chicken-inspired Caul iflower Bites tossed in hot sauce and jalapeno aiol i sauce. There is also Tradewinds' highly nutr itious Superfood Chopped Salad. Mindful Materials Did you know that 30% of sol id waste is made up of packaging waste? And restaurants contr ibute a lot with their takeaway container s. That is why al l of the Club’s takeaway packaging is made from sustainable mater ials. Step into any outlets and you wi l l find biodegradable straws. And our proudest achievement, 75% of Central ’s packaging has been conver ted to biodegradable mater ials. Reduce, Reuse & Recycle An average per son uses up to 156 bottles and cups annual ly and over 500 bi l l ion disposable coffee cups are produced ever y year. Think about al l that waste. Central is offer ing reusable tumbler s and coffee cups for sale and if you br ing your own cup, enjoy a $0.50 discount. Divide and Conquer The nation is doing it, so is the Club – Singapore’s National Recycl ing Program ensures that ever y publ ic housing complex has a recycl ing bin in its vicinity. We have recycl ing and sor ting bins located throughout the Club. This is one smal l but impactful way for a zero-waste environment. Who said eating green is bor ing?

One of the many recycling bins around the Club.

Let’s Get Lit According to the US Depar tment of Energy, residential LED technology uses at least 75% less energy and is usable up to 25 times longer than traditional incandescent l ighting. The Club’s l ightings have been replaced with LED bulbs which are energy efficient and emit less heat, plus it cuts on electr icity bi l ls.

MY EARTH, MY RESPONSIBILITY Reduce, reuse, recycle is just the beginning.

13 THE AMERICAN CLUB SINGAPORE

FEATURE

It’s official : green is the new black and there's never been a better time for sustainable l iving. Eco-fr iendly is no longer a quirky l ifestyle trend, it’s a moral imperative. And, as the protest placards are keen to remind us — there is no Planet B. However, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by gloomy stats and give up before you’ve even begun. One of the biggest mistakes we make when it comes to sustainable l iving is bel ieving our effor ts have to be al l or nothing; flawless or fai lure. When the truth is that lots of l ittle, imperfect tweaks to our habits can add up to real , lasting change. We have gathered four tips on how you can star t your sustainable journey. Start small but start now One of the most impor tant things to remember as you are transitioning into more sustainable l iving is that l ittle changes add up. And they can add up fast. So don't feel l ike you have to overhaul ever ything al l at once. Star t with easy tweaks l ike switching to energy-saving l ight bulbs or br inging your own bottle instead of buying bottled water. Be conscious about how you dispose of goods, from mattresses to clothing and beyond. Burn calories and save the earth Walking, taking the stair s and r iding a commuter bicycle are some of the easiest ways to get around whi le suppor ting the planet. That's because they require no energy (other than your own!) and emit absolutely zero greenhouse gases whi le boosting your own cardiovascular health. Dr iving a combustion-engine vehicle, on the other hand, is a significant contr ibutor to greenhouse gas emissions.

If distance puts walking or r iding a bike out of the question, publ ic transpor tation or car-shar ing are good alternatives.

Less is more If you can’t re-use it, you should refuse it.

Before buying anything new, think about either renting or borrowing, and check out second-hand stores too. Alternatively buy from brands with a circular economy, or one that use recycled mater ials, and suppor t a local business. Out with the old Nothing says pointless than emai ls spamming your inbox. It may seem harmless, but did you know that it has a negative impact on the environment? Sending one emai l without any attachments has a carbon footpr int equivalent of 4g of CO2. And the emai ls you receive ever y day real ly add up. Research has shown that that sending 65 emai ls equates to the same amount of energy needed to dr ive 1.6 km. To reduce unnecessar y energy waste where possible, unsubscr ibe from emai ls that you wi l l never open. The ear th belongs to us, and we to the ear th. If we take care of our planet, it wi l l take care of us, and our future gnerations. This is my ear th, my responsibi l ity.
