56 YEARS AND COUNTING: TRACINGTHE HISTORY OF SINGAPORE’S NATIONAL DAY By Chloe Tan

The Padang

This August, Singapore will yet again experience a very different National Day as we celebrate the mark of our nationhood in the face of the ongoing global pandemic. But did you know that there was a time that Singapore experienced National Day that was out of the ordinary? On June 3, 1959, the 1.6 million people residing in Singapore woke up to new beginnings, as the nation became an internal self-governing state under the British Crown, and National Day was celebrated on June 3 during the early 1960s. In 1963, Singapore declared full independence from Britain and shor tly after, became par t of Malaysia when it merged with the Federation of Malaya, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak. Fast forward to August 9, 1965, Singapore separated from the Federation of Malaya to go its own way. On this day, it was announced that Singapore would be a “sovereign, democratic and independent nation.” In 1966, Singapore celebrated its August 9 National Day for the first time. It was a week-long string of activities and festivities that consisted of a big parade, cultural shows, dinner par ties and fireworks displays.

In 1974, the parade was broadcast in color for the first time. On Singapore’s 10th bir thday in 1975, National Day celebrations took place at 13 locations island-wide for the first time.Yet another significant first, the National Day parade was held at the National Stadium for the first time in 1976, with some 60,000 spectators packed into the parade site. In the 1980s, National Day songs made their debut such as the famous Stand Up for Singapore (1984) and Count on Me Singapore (1986). It was also during this decade that the parades’ military displays grew continually and advanced technologically. Since 1986, spectators got to enjoy atmospheric effects created by lights, laser beams and projections. In 1987, about 100,000 lights lit up simultaneously around the Padang area, literally lighting up the night. In 1989, the Red Lions made their appearance as a formalized team, and continues to be a parade favorite until today.

The parade began at the Padang at 9:00 a.m. with the arrival of then President Yusof bin Ishak, followed by the playing of the national anthem, the presidential salute and a 21-gun salute. Some 23,000 people were involved in the parade, including soldiers, trade unionists, civic and uniformed groups, teachers and children. Spectators young and old lined the streets from Padang, to City Hall and up until Chinatown. Amidst the celebrations, at approximately 10:40 a.m., rain fell on Singapore’s first parade. Despite the downpour, the military contingent continued marching in the rain. Though drenched, many spectators were undeterred by the wet weather as they continued to marvel at and soak in the celebrations. This speaks of the nation’s strength and unity. As the skies cleared up just in time for the end of the festivities, the first of two fireworks displays took place at 4:00 p.m. at the Padang, with the second taking place at 7:00 p.m. at For t Canning Rise. Throughout the 1960s, all of the National Day parades were held at the Padang, which is one of the reasons why the Padang is still an iconic landmark in Singapore.

The 1970s saw a surge in technological advancements and industrial developments, and it was a decade of many “firsts”. Jets and helicopters made their debut in the parade, and the first fly-past of the state flag made an appearance at the 1970 parade, which would become an annual highlight up until today. In 1990, Singapore celebrated her 25th year of independence. It was also during this parade that spectators also saw for the first time, a sea review of the nation’s defence on water. In 1991, National Day Parade (NDP) funpacks are introduced and have been among the highlights for parade-goers ever y year. Par ticular ly memorable was the 1994 “night parade” that star ted later than usual at 7:15 p.m. 1997 was the year that the National Education Show for all primar y 5 students was launched with the aim to instil national identity and the spirit of togetherness in our youth. NDPs in the 2000s were vastly different from the ones before the new millennium, reflecting changes and progress the young nation had made since its independence. In 2001, Captain Christine Sim became the first woman to take par t in the state-flag fly-past since 1970, a huge step forward for the women of Singapore. In 2006, the parade was held at the National Stadium for the last time before being torn down. The shift to the Float@Marina Bay in 2007 was also a key event for Singapore. That year, Singapore saw the first ever parade on water with the city’s panoramic skyline ser ving as the backdrop.

The 2010s saw more women par ticipate in key performances during the parade. In 2011, the parade got its first female regimental sergeant major – Master Warrant Officer Jennifer Tan. In 2014, Third Warrant Officer Shir ley Ng becomes the first female Red Lion parachutist to perform an NDP celebration. NDP 2015 was one of the grandest parades to date, as the nation celebrated its 50th bir thday. The golden jubilee saw year-long celebrations nation-wide, which was termed SG50. In 2016, the parade was held for the first time at the Spor ts Hub, which took over the site of the old National Stadium. The show saw the use of high-tech props brought to life by 3D projection mapping. In 2019, the nation celebrated the Singapore Bicentennial, marking the 200th anniversar y of the arrival of the British in Singapore, which set in motion the countr y’s development into a trading por t and modern global city. In 2020, Singapore celebrated its 55th bir thday with no live audience, for the first time ever. Instead, the parade was livestreamed and celebrations were spread across the island. A salute at the scaled-down parade held at the iconic Padang was dedicated to all frontline and essential workers who have helped Singapore in its battle against COVID-19. This year’s NDP may see some semblance to last year’s – a smaller-scaled parade, fly-pasts in the hear tlands, home engagement activities, live-streamed performances and fireworks across the island. Regardless the size of the celebration, NDP 2021 will ser ve as an unyielding reminder that Singapore will keep going.

CELEBRATING

FESTIVAL IN SINGAPORE By Chloe Tan

With the Mid-Autumn Festival coming up soon, two things come alive in Singapore: mooncake mania and the lighting of colorful lanterns across the island. Also touted as the Mooncake Festival, this annual cultural affair marks the end of the autumn har vest and is traditionally held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Lunar Calendar during a full moon, which happens to fall on September 21 this year.

Origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival Legend has it that the Mid-Autumn Festival or iginated over 2,000 year s ago when Chang-E stole and drank her tyrannical husband’s el ixir of l ife in a bid to save her people from an eternal reign of terror and as a result ascended to the moon where she became known as the Moon Goddess. Left al l alone on Ear th, her husband would prepare a feast each year when the moon was at its br ightest, just to catch a gl impse of his wife, Chang-E. This soon turned into a tradition of offer ing wor ship to the Moon Goddess. Today, the moon-wor shipping r itual has faded and the celebration is a time for fami l ies to get together to enjoy a hear ty meal , indulge in mooncakes and sip on tea whi le the kids often play with lanterns. Mooncake Mania Without a doubt, mooncakes are the hal lmark of the Mid-Autumn Festival . Legend has it that mooncakes were created to carr y secret messages from the Han Chinese in a bid to organize a rebel l ion to help free Yuan China from their Mongol ian ruler s. The successful rebel l ion took place dur ing the Mid-Autumn Festival hence the significance of consuming mooncakes dur ing the festival . These round pastr ies are traditional ly fi l led with lotus-seed or bean paste and salted egg yolk. Today, you can find many innovative renditions of mooncakes ranging from snowskin mooncakes to those with unor thodox flavor s such as black truffle, mi lk tea and dur ian. You must be thinking, “Where can I get mooncakes?” The Club’s got you covered. Those who have a penchant for classic mooncakes but are embarking on a healthier diet wi l l enjoy The Club’s traditional White Lotus Paste with Melon Seed/Single Yolk/Double Yolk mooncakes that are baked with reduced sugar. Despite being low in sugar, these mooncakes do not compr ise on taste, meaning that you can indulge in them gui lt-free. For the adventurous folks, why not tr y our unique Green Tea Paste with Melon Seed or Yuzu Paste with Melon Seed mooncakes.

Lit with Lanterns Lanterns are ver y much a big par t of the Mid-Autumn Festival . Dur ing the weeks leading up to the festival , you’ l l see the streets along Chinatown being l it up with hundreds of lanterns and sculptures with a centerpiece featured at the inter section of Eu Tong Sen Street and Upper Cross Street that typical ly depicts fami ly reunion. Though we are sti l l in the face of a global pandemic , you can sti l l look forward to going on lantern walks with your l ittle ones whi le soaking in the festive atmosphere at these gardens/parks (remember to practice safe social distancing!): Bukit Batok Town Park Better known as Little Gui l in, Bukit Batok Town Park is reminiscent to that of Gui l in in China – a granite rock sitting within a lake. The tower ing rock cl iffs acts as a majestic backdrop to the large lake and is landscaped in a way that al lows you to walk along the banks of the lake. Jurong Lake Gardens Jurong Lake Gardens is a picturesque garden compr ising of four smal ler gardens – Lakeside Garden, Chinese Garden, Japanese Garden and Garden Promenade. Be transpor ted to ancient China when you step into the Chinese Garden. The space is model led after Chinese architectural styles that dates back to the 5th Centur y, complete with a ser ies of stone br idges, pagodas and a tea house. Gardens by the Bay It is no doubt that Gardens by the Bay wi l l be beautiful ly l it up dur ing the Mid-Autumn Festival . The theme of its annual Mid-Autumn Festival lantern l ight-up is typical ly inspired by ancient Chinese fables, kingdoms and poems. As the moon on Mid-Autumn Day shines bigger and br ighter than usual , symbol izing fami ly reunion, why not take this time to get together with your loved ones for a simple home-cooked meal and revel in the beauty of the moon. Here’s wishing you and your fami ly a Happy Mid- Autumn Festival .

10 K

A WALK IN A PARK Michael Cheah, our resident Personal Trainer, explores why it is important to walk 10K steps a day. Did you know a human being burns an average of 500 calories a day if they walk 10,000 steps (this rule isn't written in stone because the answer depends on factors such as your intensity, weight, body fat percentage, muscle mass and age)? And studies and have shown that one pound of body fat equals to about 3500 calories. That means completing 10,000 steps each day typically burns about 2000 to 3500 calories each week which translates into a pound of fat loss each week To achieve an optimal level of fitness, I would recommend you to pay your doctor a visit, to check these three things: • Is the level of your thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) normal? • Are your hormones balanced? Testing your hormones using saliva testing rather than blood testing is more accurate • Are your adrenals normal? There are three types of adrenal testing (blood or saliva or dried urine testing) - ask your doctor which test is the best for you. Only if all three (thyroid, hormones and adrenals) are normal and balanced then effective fat loss can take place with a balanced eating plan and exercise.
